Life…

*

We’re still in holiday mode so quite honestly I’m not getting a lot done. My husband still has another week off from work and with two of the kids leaving home soon for university we are enjoying family time.

My husband and I caught up with some friends this past week, one of whom we haven’t for more than thirty years. We had fun reminiscing about our teenage years, and how odd it is that it was so long ago, but feels so much more recent.

My youngest daughter celebrated her 20th birthday yesterday. I made a cake but tried to take it out of the specialty tin before it was cool enough, a silly mistake, and it broke apart. It still tasted good though.

What I’m Reading This Week…

The One and Only Dolly Jamieson is a compelling feel-good novel featuring a proud and gutsy heroine with a truly unbreakable spirit.

Life is full of downs and ups . . .

Dolly Jamieson is not homeless, she’s merely between permanent abodes. The 78-year-old spends her days keeping warm at the local library, where she enjoys sparring with the officious head librarian and helping herself to the free morning tea. It’s not so bad, really.

But it’s certainly a far cry from the 1960s, when this humble girl from Geelong became an international star of the stage. As the acclaimed lead in the Broadway production of The Rose of France, all Dolly’s dreams had come true.

So how, in her old age, did she end up here?

When Jane Leveson, a well-to-do newcomer to the library, shows an interest in Dolly, the pair strike up an unlikely friendship – and soon Jane is offering to help Dolly write her memoirs.

Yet Dolly can detect a deep sadness in the younger woman’s eyes. Perhaps by working together to recount the glittering highs, devastating lows and tragic secrets of Dolly’s life, both women can finally face their pasts and start to heal . . .

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis comes a collection of steamy, STEMinist novellas featuring a trio of engineers and their loves in loathing—with a special bonus chapter!

Under One Roof

An environmental engineer discovers that scientists should never cohabitate when she finds herself stuck with the roommate from hell—a detestable big-oil lawyer who won’t leave the thermostat alone.

Stuck with You

A civil engineer and her nemesis take their rivalry—and love—to the next level when they get stuck in a New York elevator.

Below Zero

A NASA aerospace engineer’s frozen heart melts as she lies injured and stranded at a remote Arctic research station and the only person willing to undertake the dangerous rescue mission is her longtime rival.

A coastal town is evacuated after record floods. Three young police officers are left behind. With a killer.

The small beachside town of Gloster is on the edge of disaster. After constant rain, floodwaters are rising fast.

Detective Constable Craig Watson, exiled to Gloster from Sydney, is a young man with a damaged past and an uncertain future.

Constables Ellie Cameron and Larissa Brookes are young women struggling to show their worth as police officers under a misogynistic sergeant.

The drowning town holds a secret that someone is prepared to murder for, and as the floodwaters cut Gloster off from the world the three young police officers begin to understand that it’s not just them left stranded. Somewhere out there in the floodwaters is a killer. And he needs them dead.

Taut, compelling and visceral, John Byrnes’ Headland announces a major new voice in Australian crime fiction.

Introducing the fabulous Ms Peregrine Fisher, niece of the famous Phryne Fisher, as seen on 7plus and Acorn tv

Peregrine Fisher is unexpectedly summoned to a meeting of the Adventuresses’ Club of the Antipodes, where she learns some incredible news.

When Adventuress Florence Astor is accused of murder, Peregrine jumps at the chance to help on the case. Detective James Steed, initially dismissive, quickly finds Peregrine’s flair for investigating and headstrong nature leave him little choice.

A second shocking death occurs and Detective Steed’s boss, Inspector Sparrow, demands the case be brought to a close with suspicious speed.

With Sparrow issuing threats, time is running out for Peregrine. It seems she’s set herself an impossible task, but then, as Detective Steed says, ‘never underestimate a woman named Fisher’.

  1. Aww bless you! To be honest, that’s really easily done with cakes. The important thing is that it tasted good! When I first started baking cakes, I made this case that really looked the part. It looked absolutely gorgeous… but you could literally throw it at a wall and it’d survive, ha ha! It was the best-looking book on the Christmas table but we couldn’t even cut into it.

I hope you have all been enjoying the family time together 🙂

Have a great week ahead x

  2. It sounds like you have had a lovely holiday together. Happy birthday to your youngest daughter. I’ve made many, many baked goods that didn’t look fantastic, but that’s part of the learning process, I think.

I like the sound of The One and Only Dolly Jamieson. I’m very interested in reading stories about old people right now. lol

  3. I have had my cakes fall apart as well…but they always taste good! I hope you enjoy that family time as long as possible. The kids grow up so fast and then they’re off. Looks like you have some great books.

  4. Happy birthday to your daughter! How the cake tastes is truly the most important thing – I’ve had some beautiful cakes that are gross to eat lol. Enjoy your extended holiday! Jealous as it was hard to get back to things over here lol!

  5. Good for you – enjoying family time! Crumb cake! Yum!
The One and Only Dolly Jamieson reminds me of the book, Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk. Subsequently, Dolly Jamieson has moved up in positions to read! Headland sounds intense, but oh so good!
And so….my TBR list grows! 😊
Happy family time and reading to you!

  8. Happy birthday to your daughter! Sounds like such a nice time getting together with friends. We are just getting back to regular life and it’s a struggle! I feel like I have to continuously remind myself of what day it is – we may have relaxed a bit too much! Have a great week!

  9. Happy Birthday to your daughter! I am glad you are enjoying your holidays! When it comes to cakes, taste really is all that matters. 🙂 Just Murdered looks cute! I hope to read Loathe to Love You. I haven’t tried anything by Hazelwood before and those three novellas sound like a good place to dip my toe in. I hope you have a great week and enjoy your reading!
