Christmas Shopping Update: 12/15

It’s been quite a week! School is done for the year, hubby is now on holidays, and Aleah got excellent results for her HSC/ATAR and is now officially enrolled in university for 2021. The Christmas tree is up, I’ve done all the food shopping for the holidays, but I still have a few presents to pick up, including something for my husband’s birthday this Wednesday.

And *Sigh* It seems I spoke to soon last week. After weeks without a case of COVID in our state, we now have an outbreak in Sydney. It appears while our government has been strict with international arrivals and quarantine, they’ve given some leeway to international airline staff. In the last four days, contact tracing and testing has found 68 cases all linked to one breach. At the moment the cluster seems to be confined to a particular region of Sydney, which has now gone into lockdown, but it’s likely to grow given that school holidays started last week and lots of people had already travelled near and far. While we are about 350km (220miles) north of Sydney, people are worried it could already be here as a couple that tested positive visited the next town over (where my husband works), dining at two local establishments, and visiting local stores.

We won’t risk visiting family for Christmas in Sydney while there are active cases, but my parents live close enough that we should still be able to meet for Christmas lunch, as long as no spread is detected in our area.

I only have two books on my reading list this week, I just have too much to do, hopefully both will help me finish off some challenges before the end of the year.

Wishing you and yours a wonderful Christmas/Holiday Celebration x

What I’m Reading This Week…

On the scorching February day in 2009 that became known as Black Saturday, a man lit two fires in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley, then sat on the roof of his house to watch the inferno. In the Valley, where the rates of crime were the highest in the state, more than thirty people were known to police as firebugs. But the detectives soon found themselves on the trail of a man they didn’t know.

The Arsonist takes readers on the hunt for this man, and inside the strange puzzle of his mind. It is also the story of fire in this country, and of a community that owed its existence to that very element. The command of fire has defined and sustained us as a species – understanding its abuse will define our future.

A powerful real-life thriller written with Hooper’s trademark lyric detail and nuance, The Arsonist is a reminder that in an age of fire, all of us are gatekeepers.

++++++

In a land where three suns almost never set, a fledgling killer joins a school of assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers who destroyed her family.

Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father’s failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she hides in a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and her father’s former comrades. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined.

Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic—the Red Church. If she bests her fellow students in contests of steel, poison and the subtle arts, she’ll be inducted among the Blades of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and one step closer to the vengeance she desires. But a killer is loose within the Church’s halls, the bloody secrets of Mia’s past return to haunt her, and a plot to bring down the entire congregation is unfolding in the shadows she so loves.

Will she even survive to initiation, let alone have her revenge?

  1. Congratulations to your daughter on her excellent results. I felt certain she would do extraordinarily well.

I’m sorry to hear about the outbreak in Sydney. We should be locked down. My county had 350 new cases in one day on Friday and it’s still climbing. There will be no visiting for us this Christmas. Sadly.

I like the look of Nevernight. Would not want to live there!

    Happy holidays!

  2. Congrats to your daughter, and yay for all the holiday preparedness! We did the same this weekend- finished up some last minute stuff.

Sorry to hear about the Covid outbreak. That dang thing is so insidious and easily spread- ugh.

Hope you have a wonderful Christmas!

  3. Congratulations to your daughter. So nice to have everything ready for Christmas and have some time to relax. I am sorry to hear about the Covid outbreak in Sydney. We have outbreaks here in Ontario and they are locking down the province Christmas Eve. My son and his family will come over Christmas day for a meal but it will be a very quiet day this year.

  4. It must be amazing to live in a country where there is sufficient contact tracing! We have no clue what that feels like. LOL.

Things should improve once we have better role models in the White House…January 20 can’t come soon enough.

Enjoy your week and your holidays, and happy birthday to your husband.

  5. Fingers crossed that the outbreak won’t reach you and you can enjoy Christmas with the local rellies. I think the outbreak will hold back the Ausssi/NZ bubble as well. Have a great Christmas and hope the weather is lovely. Think we are forecast rain.

  6. You have a nice tree!
In France we had a confinement which finished on the 15th but now we have a curfew. Not for christmas eve but otherwise we have it. They are starting to say that they did the wrong choice but for now it’s nice to be able to go outside without a paper to say what I’m doing.
    Have some nice holidays

  7. I saw about the outbreak in Sydney in the news. Hopefully, they’ve caught it in time to stop it spreading too far.

Nevernight is one of those books I’ve had on my TBR for ages. I’ll keep an eye out for your review. 🙂

  8. My parents have decided to stay at home for Christmas, sadly the UK really hasn’t got this under control. We are having my mother-in-law, as long as we all feel well (we will test our temperatures too). She lives on her own and spending christmas on her own would have a terrible impact on her mental health.

Have a peaceful and safe Christmas!

  9. Congrats to your daughter! Very exciting.

So sorry cases are on the rise in Sydney. Ours are falling slightly but not by much. Still scary where we’re at…since I’m in the States it’s just scary no matter where you’re at…

I hope you enjoy your holidays and glad you can still visit with your parents. I hope you all have a lovely holiday season!

  10. It sounds like you are ready for the holidays. I like your tree! I was sorry to hear about the recent outbreak in Sydney. From what I have read about your country, you have top notch tracing. I hope you all are able to get the situation under control again soon.

I hope you enjoy your current reads and have a Happy Christmas!

  11. We aren’t seeing anyone thanks to the daily increases in the Florida covid numbers. We have the worst governor ever. Can’t wait until he’s gone, he advocates opening everything up.
Merry Christmas and happy everything to you and yours!! Let’s make 2021 a great year. I am looking forward to the nonfiction challenge and a historical reading challenge as well.
Great job about your daiughter’s grades and starting university.

  12. It’s amazing that an area can do so well with containing outbreaks, but misses one area and it all goes to hell. Be safe! We’re battling the Los Angeles outbreaks here and hoping they don’t make it up to Santa Barbara.

  13. Congratulations to your daughter, you must be so proud and she must be so happy ! We’re out of lockdown here, for the moment, with the holidays and all that. You’re wise to limit the family reunions, after all, it’s only for one year (I hope !). I wish you a great week and happy holidays 🙂
