This week sees the launch of Non-Fiction November. This is my first time participating. I’ll be posting for each topic every Friday during the month.
Week 1: (Oct. 28 to Nov. 1) Your Year in Nonfiction hosted by julzreads.com
Week 2: (Nov. 4 to 8) Book Pairing hosted by SarahsBookshelves.com
Week 3: (Nov. 11 to 15) Be The Expert/Ask the Expert/Become the Expert hosted by DoingDeweyDecimal.com
Week 4: (Nov. 18 to 22) Nonfiction Favorites hosted by ShelfAware
Week 5: (Nov. 25 to 29) New to My TBR hosted by WhatsNonFiction.com
I’ve read only fourteen non fiction titles so far this year (though posted reviews for 18), I had planned to read a minimum of two a month, so I’ve fallen short of my self imposed target.
Of those fourteen, Unbelievable by T Christian Miller & Ken Armstrong is the one that I would recommend without hesitation. It is an accessible and utterly compelling story focusing on the experience of a young girl who was accused, and convicted of making a false report of rape. More than two years later the capture of a serial rapist revealed photographs taken of the young woman during her ordeal. She had told the truth. My review is HERE.
You can click HERE to view all past reviews for non fiction titles at Book’d Out, or use the Category menu in the sidebar on the right.
I’m most often drawn to nonfiction that falls under the genres of true crime/law, humour, memoirs, history, psychology, and social science. I’m rarely interested in celebrity autobiographies/biographies, arts, fashion, religion/spirituality, business/economics, politics, wellness/self-help, or philosophy.
By participating in NonFiction November, I’m looking forward to exploring new to me NonFiction titles, and finding new bloggers to follow. I also hope to read some of the titles I’ve added to my wishlist during this past year. I’ve made a list of fifteen books and I am going to get through as many as I can during the month, between my review commitments.
I had a really hard time whittling down this list. In part it’s been determined by what I can easily access either in print or ebook, only two are books I’ve received for review. I’m likely going to share a mixture of mini and full reviews. The list is not in any particular order, except for the first, what I choose to read will likely depend on my mood.
(The titles are linked to Goodreads)
Confessions of a Bookseller by Shaun Bythell
Bush Doctors by Annabelle Brayley
Unmentionable by Therese Oneill
They Walk Among Us by Benjamin Fitton
Nobody’s Victim by Carrie Goldberg
Eggshell Skull by Bri Lee
The Miracle and Tragedy of the Dionne Quintuplets by Sarah Miller
Syria’s Secret Library by Mike Thomson
The Adventures of Maud West, Lady Detective by Susannah Stapleton
Inheritance by Dani Shapiro
Word Freak by Stefan Fatsis
Life Moves Pretty Fast by Hadley Freeman
Fifty Things That Arent My Fault by Cathy Gausewite
Killer instinct by Donald Grant
Murder Misadventure and Miserable Ends by Dr Catie Gilchrist
I’m really looking forward to seeing what other participants in NonFiction November will be recommending and reading this month.

I’m happy to find your lovely blog (through your comment on mine!). Happy posting and NF reading! Since you like true crime, you might like Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann. 👍😍

I’m a total mood reader, too. I read it a long time ago, but I LOVED Word Freak! If you’re into Scrabble, I think you’ll find it completely fascinating.

Shelleyrae, its a shame you haven’t met the two non-fictions a month you wanted to read, however I think 14 non-fictions read is really impressive! I hope you enjoy taking part in Nonfiction November and happy reading! 🙂

You’ve read a lot of great nonfiction even if you didn’t make the 2/month goal! Unbelievable sounds like in interesting read. Confessions of a Bookseller and Fifty Things That Aren’t My Fault are both on my wish list. Inheritance was my favorite nonfiction of the year.

Unbelievable sounds like the kind of book where I’d be yelling at people!

Unbelievable was one of my favorites the year I read it, what an incredible and important story. Confessions of a Bookseller and Unmentionable have been on my list and I’ve heard so many good things about both! I just got a copy of Murder, Misadventure, and Miserable Ends and can’t wait to start it, maybe will get to it this month too. And I really liked Syria’s Secret Library, curious to hear what you think of it. And looking forward to your posts, glad you’re taking part!

I am definitely a mood reader. I have a stack of books that I would like to read but also a cupboard full of all the nonfiction titles I collect and never read. I tend to hoard them for this time of year!
Seems like Inheritance has been on everyone’s list this year! Either they’ve read it or they want to. Am seriously thinking about adding it to mine.
Happy reading!

I got 1 off your list added to my TBR — Bush Doctors, sounds very interesting! I loved “Inheritance” by Shapiro too! But then I am an ancestry.com fan. Thanks for sharing your list.

Oh wow, Unbelievable sounds like a deeply uncomfortable, but very important story. What a terrible, terrible ordeal for that poor woman. I’m definitely drawn to history and true crime in nonfiction as well.

I watched the Netflix series on Unbelievable – not ready to back it up with the book just yet but will get to it. A horrifying story but totally believable (as you will see when you get to Eggshell Skull).
And when you need some light NF reading, grab Life Moves Pretty Fast – it’s good fun.

Non-Fiction November sounds like fun. Enjoy it!
I tend to watch more non-fiction than read it but Unbelievable sounds like a really good one. I added Unmentionable to my wish list, so thanks for the recommendation!

I like to read True Crime as well. Unbelievable sounds insane. How awful. 😦
They Walk Among Us and Confessions of a Bookseller are definitely going on my list!

Well, we may be on opposite ends of the nonfiction spectrum, but I still enjoy seeing your list and getting some ideas! 🙂 I just got a Kindle sample sent to me on a historical fiction recommendation on the Dionne Quintuplets.

Great list! Only one I have read was Inheritance which I did not make it all the way through. Love seeing so many I have not heard of and will be checking out!

Unbelievable looks like SUCH a hard read. I would say that my biggest area of nonfiction ignorance is true crime, because I’m such a baby and I have a hard time facing it. But maybe I’ll get some excellent recs this month! 🙂

Of your list, I’ve read Confessions of a Bookseller and Word Freak – I read the latter so long ago but remember it as being very good – and I’ve kept it all these years and I’m quite good at weeding books out. Happy reading! We overlap on sociology and I’ll be interested to see all your reviews (I didn’t dare do an actual list but am going to work my way through some more TBR).

I just signed up for Nonfiction November, late to the party, but I see several books of yours that I would probably enjoy.Of course Unbelievable looks great to me as I read a similar-themed book this year called Missoula. It’s time for young women to be believed, Things have to change.

Being a mood reader definitely makes compiling a to read list quite hard, but variety (such as you have here) is key. I hope you’re able to make a good dent in the books listed. Happy reading this November!

Is Unbelievable the book that a Netflix series of the same subject was based on? Didn’t know it was a book.

Yes, it began as an investigative article, which became a book, and then the Netflix special

I’m also dipping into Confessions of a Bookseller this month. Highly amusing but also has a serious element. It makes you wonder why anyone would want to run a bookshop, the profit levels are non existent
