Life…

*

So this is 2022 huh?

So far it’s not very promising given the NSW government’s decision to ‘live with CoVid’ coincided with the arrival of Omicron. In the last 3 weeks we have had about 10x the cases over the whole pandemic period, and our health services, including testing facilities and hospitals are overwhelmed. It’s frightening and I’m furious.

I can only hope it will get better.

Three good things:

I have plenty of great books to keep me busy

My parents celebrated their Golden 50th Wedding anniversary on New Years Day

It’s my youngest daughter’s 19th birthday this weekend.

What I’m Reading This Week…

Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by.

Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection.

But Molly’s orderly life is upended the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself dead in his bed. Before she knows what’s happening, Molly’s unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black—but will they be able to find the real killer before it’s too late?

A Clue-like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit, The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different—and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.

From fresh new voice Aliya Ali-Afzal, Would I Lie to You? is a page-turning, warm and funny debut about what happens when you have your dream life – and are about to lose it.

At the school gates, Faiza fits in. It took a few years, but now the snobbish mothers who mistook her for the nanny treat her as one of their own. She’s learned to crack their subtle codes, speak their language of handbags and haircuts and discreet silver watches. You’d never guess, at the glamorous kids’ parties and the leisurely coffee mornings, that Faiza’s childhood was spent following her parents round the Tooting Cash ‘n’ Carry.

When her husband Tom loses his job in finance, he stays calm. Something will come along, and in the meantime, they can live off their savings. But Faiza starts to unravel. Raising the perfect family comes at a cost – and the money Tom put aside has gone. When Tom’s redundancy package ends, Faiza will have to tell him she’s spent it all.

Unless she doesn’t…

It only takes a second to lie to Tom. Now Faiza has six weeks to find £75,000 before her lie spirals out of control. If anyone can do it, Faiza can: she’s had to fight for what she has, and she’ll fight to keep it. But as the clock ticks down, and Faiza desperately tries to put things right, she has to ask herself: how much more should she sacrifice to protect her family?

Marshall Grade returns in an action-packed thrillride through the New York underworld.

When a former NYPD colleague is shot dead in front of him, private investigator Marshall Grade discovers there’s far more to the killing than meets the eye.

Ray Vialoux is in trouble. Big trouble. And he needs Marshall Grade’s help.

Reluctantly, Grade agrees to meet. Over dinner in a Brooklyn restaurant, he learns that his former NYPD colleague owes money – a lot of money – to the wrong people. But the conversation is cut short by gunfire, and suddenly Ray is lying dead on the restaurant floor.

As Marshall investigates the circumstances leading up to the murder, tracking down the drug dealers, bag men, bent cops and mob players within Ray’s orbit, it becomes clear there’s far more to the killing than a gambling debt. Just who is responsible for Vialoux’s death . . . and why? What secrets are his family hiding? And can Marshall find the answers before his own history marks him as the prime suspect?

  1. Omicron is exploding and I share your frustration. It’s like we never learn (speaking from the US standpoint here where people are still debating things like MASKS).

In good news though, happy birthday to your daughter!!! Hope you are having a good weekend. 🙂

I’m seeing the Maid pop pop everywhere and I want to read it!

  2. Happy New Year, Shelleyrae. I feel your frustration. Omicron is overwhelming testing sites to the point that the hospital administrators are telling people not to come to the emergency rooms of testing sites unless you are in bad shape. Symptoms like cough, sore throat and fatigue, they just said to stay home until you feel better. At least it is not as deadly as other strains. Happy Birthday to your daughter and congratulations to your parents. Look for the positives.

  3. We searched high and low for a Covid test until my brother-in-law finally found a test for us. How can you possibly know what to do if you can’t even find a way to get tested?! It’s a mess here.

I like the sound of The Maid and your other reads.

    Happy New Year!

  4. It feels like many governments are going with the “just let it ride” mentality. The US just reduced the quarantine time by half, to 5 days, so that businesses can keep running. Love that capitalism is winning out over science. Not.

  5. This new wave of the virus has been awful everywhere. Just when it seemed like there was light at the end of the tunnel . . . I do hope things get better soon. Happy Birthday to your daughter and congratulations to your parents on their 50th Wedding Anniversary! Your upcoming reads all sound good! I hope you enjoy them. Have a good week, Shelleyrae. Stay safe!

  6. I read The Maid last year (like that was a long time ago 🙂 and enjoyed it. Congrats to your parents on their 50th! Happy birthday to your daughter too.

  7. Still celebrating I see! Well not over the Omicron though, I’d be spitting too if I lived in NSW. I got a sore throat last week, as there is no covid in our area I take it I don’t have it, but have put myself in isolation until it passes! Take care.

  8. Happy new year! You’re a bit ahead of me, it’s only 9:30 PM on Sunday here. So my It’s monday post will be up tomorrow!
I haven’t heard of any of the books you mentioned, but I hope they were good reads. Happy anniversary to your parents and happy birthday to your daughter!

  9. I’m getting really tired of Covid-19. It seems like there’s a new variation every day with each one worse than the last. The Maid sounds like a great story. I’ll be eager to hear what you think of it. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  10. I understand your frustration! My brother returned from Melbourne to surprise us for Christmas. We had a great time as we hadn’t been together as a family for three years, but we’ve paid a price as he now has covid as well as my sisters, nieces, nephews. Luckily they all have very mild symptoms. Still, he has to stay two more weeks now so we get to hang out for a bit longer.
I do understand the complexities around it but it does seem that governments have decided that Neo liberalism wins, seems to be ‘let it rip’ policy. So difficult to get a PCR or rapid flow test around here and schools are back next week. Anyway, lots of good books to read. Stay safe all.

  11. I feel your frustration. I feel like we sacrificed non stop in 2020 and 2021 just for everything to explode anyway. Books were a huge contribution to my mental health during those times (even more than usual) and I guess 2022 will be the same? Lol.

I read A Marvellous Light a couple days ago and really enjoyed it! Be keen to know what you think of it when you’ve finished it.

  12. Happy anniversary to your parents and happy birthday to your daughter. I feel your frustration about COVID. I live in a place where the local government never took it seriously. Since people won’t follow any precautions, we just have to sit around and wait to see what happens.

  13. Happy New Year. We will all be quite glad when the COVID gets gone. Omicron seems to be everywhere but, thankfully, not as dangerous.
At least your family is starting the year with some celebrations.
Exit 45 sounds like a thriller series I might like.
Have a good week and Happy Reading!

  14. Happy New Year, Shelley! I hope you and your family had a great NYE. I am currently watching the numbers of Omnicron rise and I have to admit I am frightened too — and so pissed off everytime Scomo opens his mouth these days. SIGHs. However, back to books — I didn’t know Ben Sanders had a new one coming up! How cool!!

  16. I hear your frustration and share it. Thank goodness for books. Where would we be without them? Congratulations on the milestones in your family–your parents’ anniversary and your daughter’s birthday. Happy and (hopefully) healthy 2022!
