Life…

*

Our region of NSW was finally released from stay at home orders on Saturday, so my parents raced up to visit us this weekend because who knows how long it will last? The boys will go back to school today, but they only have a week left of term three before two weeks of spring break, so its somewhat anticlimactic.

My daughter and I are still doing our late night viewing thing, we are currently watching Sleepy Hollow, whilst as a family we are watching the last season of Lucifer on Netflix.

I finally got my read on this past week, but I’m still struggling to get reviews written. I’m thinking I might need to change to a simpler format for a while. I’m worried that it will mean I’m short changing my blog readers, and publishers but I feel like I have to try something. Please bear with me….

What I’m Reading This Week…

The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman

It’s the following Thursday.

Elizabeth has received a letter from an old colleague, a man with whom she has a long history. He’s made a big mistake, and he needs her help. His story involves stolen diamonds, a violent mobster, and a very real threat to his life.

As bodies start piling up, Elizabeth enlists Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron in the hunt for a ruthless murderer. And if they find the diamonds too? Well, wouldn’t that be a bonus?

But this time they are up against an enemy who wouldn’t bat an eyelid at knocking off four septuagenarians. Can The Thursday Murder Club find the killer (and the diamonds) before the killer finds them?

The Library by Bella Osbourne

Two different generations. Two unusual people. Thrown together to save their local library.

Tom is a teenager and blends into the background of life. After a row with his dad, and facing an unhappy future at the dog food factory, he escapes to the library. Tom unwittingly ends up with a bagful of romance novels and comes under the suspicion of Maggie.

Maggie is a pensioner and has been happily alone for ten years, at least that’s what she tells herself. When Tom comes to her rescue a friendship develops that could change her life. As Maggie helps Tom to stand up for himself, Tom helps Maggie realise the mistakes of her past don’t have to define her future.

They each set out to prove that the library isn’t just about books – it’s the heart of their community.

Together they discover some things are worth fighting for.

The Unusual Abduction of Avery Conifer by Ilsa Evans

Two women abduct and hide out with their four-year-old granddaughter Avery, who they suspect is being harmed. They both love Avery … shame they can’t stand each other. A wise and witty novel for readers of Sophie Green and Brooke Davis.

What would you do to protect a child?

Beth’s daughter Cleo and Shirley’s son Daniel used to be married. Now Cleo is in gaol for supposedly contravening a family violence order, and Daniel has full-time care of their four-year-old daughter, Avery.

When Shirley suspects that Daniel is harming Avery, she enlists Beth to abduct their own granddaughter, even though the two women can’t stand each other. They are joined on the run across country Victoria by Winnie, Shirley’s own 89-year-old tech-savvy mother, and Harthacnut, Beth’s miniature schnauzer.

The abduction gives rise to crises both personal and social, as Shirley’s large and interfering family – including her toxic son – struggle to come to terms with her actions, amid a whirl of police investigation and media excitement. This heartfelt, wise, witty and wholly original novel explores of the lengths we may go to for those we love, and the unintended damage folded into daily life.

Prisoner by S.R. White

When a man is found savagely ‘crucified’ amidst a murky swamp in northern Australia, detective Dana Russo and her team are called to a shocking scene. The victim is a convicted rapist, just released from prison, who years earlier committed an atrocious crime yards from where he was killed.

Who murdered him – and why? With several potential leads, the investigation quickly becomes more complex, and sinister, than anyone imagined. And Dana realises she’ll have to confront her own troubled past to understand the true motives of the killer…

  1. Glad you got to visit with your parents and my fingers are crossed you don’t have to go back to stay at home orders any time soon. I borrowed The Thursday Murder Club from the library last year, but wasn’t able to get to it in time. Thanks for the reminder to put it back on my list!

  2. Blogging, reading and reviewing books is supossed to be fun. So take your time to figure out how you will do it in the future. Only here with a big blog or only via social media. Whatever makes you happy. And believe me, your fans, followers etc. won´t leave you only because you are looking for some changes. Happy reading and have a great new week.

  3. We have just started watching the first season of Lucifer. No idea why I left it so late! We are enjoying it a lot.

Love all your books today. Great selection! I’m interested in the new Richard Osman and I love how they sticked with the same cover as The Thursday Murder Club. Well kind of.

Have a good week ahead and I hope your bans stay lifted!

  4. I’ve seen Lucifer on Adds on Tv but never given it a thought. Now I am wondering. Just read your thorough review for The Wattle Island Book Club, I need to go put that in my line up. I think going for smaller book reviews is fine, a couple of your paragraphs would have hooked me into the book anyway and really that’s the aim – share it with others and make them see if its for them. That said you do a great book review for sure. So do what you need for the day. Yes I feel like you out restrictions have lessened but for how long! Auckland is still not on top of it. Take care.

  5. I’m glad you are reading better. I go through phases with reviews. I don’t say TOO much because that might be spoilery. So I talk about my feelings, plot, world and character building. But I don’t know that I have any set format, so I think it’s fine to change things up a bit. I’m looking forward to the new Richard Osman too.

  6. I’m glad you got to see your parents.

Also glad that you’re doing better with your reading. I can’t say the same about me 😦

I’m not familiar with any of your books so I’ll be looking them up.

  7. Sleepy Hollow sounds fun. and I hope your stay home orders stay rescinded. There are so many things going on with this virus right now- hopefully things get better this fall/ spring, not worse.

Hope you have a good week. 🙂

  8. I can’t wait until we can open up again. I haven’t seen my mother for an age. She’s in a hot spot so I don’t know how long it will be before I can go there.

  9. I’m glad you have relief from stay-at-home orders, however short they are, and I hope things that cause the orders to be reinstated do not develop.

I love your format for your blog post, and I hope you don’t have to curtail it, but I understand if you do. I always find so many great books here on your blog. This week I’ve added Wattle Island Book Club and The Library to my list.

  10. Happy Hour looks like one I would enjoy.

Glad you got released from lockdown for a bit…and you’re right, you never know when they will close things down again!

Right now, the clubhouse in my senior apartment complex is locked down. We are still allowed to go out and about, though, so it seems to be limited.

    Enjoy your week!

  11. During these difficult times Shelleyrae, I think that we just do what we can. The last thing that we need to do is pile more pressure on ourselves. Take care of yourself first. If you can’t care for yourself, you can’t care for others properly. Your reviews will still be awesome, even in a simpler format. ❤

  12. It’s so good to hear that your stay at home orders were removed. It seems that many of us are having a reading or blogging slump.

I haven’t read The Thursday Murder Club yet, but would like to. The Library sounds interesting as well.

    Have a good week!

  13. I’m glad your restrictions were lifted. Lucifer is on my list to try on Netflix. It looks good.

I’ve had trouble writing reviews lately. You do what you feel is best for you. I’m still trying to figure it all out.

I hope you have a great week!

  14. Lucifer is still on my list for a guilty pleasure to try!

Glad the lockdown has lifted a bit and you were able to see family. So important right now.

Thursday Murders Club looks exciting. I’ll have to check it out.

My posting is very sporadic right now. I end up doing one post for all my reviews for the month! Good luck and hope you find something that works for you.

  15. I’ve been seeing Richard Osman’s books everywhere. On my TBR! I like the look of The Library, too, but I’m a sucker for books with library settings. I have really been a slacker on reviews. All I can seem to manage are the Monday reading roundup posts. I used to participate in Weekend Cooking and Top Ten Tuesday, and I keep thinking maybe next week, but the weeks seem to go by so fast!

  16. I’m glad you managed a visit with your family. It’s been over 18 months since we saw our offspring, Robin, or either set of my parents. With them living almost 2000 miles away, and the virus situation in the US, it hasn’t seemed like a good idea—we haven’t wanted to risk picking up the virus en route and giving it to them. Hopefully the new vaccine mandates will at least slow transmission in a few months.

The Library sounds good. I hope you enjoy it—and thank you for bringing it to my attention!

  17. That’s good your stay at home orders were lifted and your parents could come visit. Quarantine has been lifted here for some time and the numbers keep rising. Your reviews are great, just do what’s best for you. Enjoy the Netflix shows, we’re hooked on the new AHs season. And happy reading this week, The Library especially caught my eye.

  18. I’m glad your parents got to visit!

My husband and I are watching Lucifer too. I’m a very slow watcher but even by my standards, it’s taking us FOREVER to get through it. Something about the storyline with his mom in season 2 has really put me off.

I’ve been struggling with reviewing for a while now. I hope you find something that works for you. Your readers will still be here.

    Enjoy your week!

  19. My reviews have gotten shorter and shorter in the pandemic. All my admiration for the people who have creative energy at this point but I’m just running on fumes and even being able to do mini-reviews feels like a massive win.

  20. I found you on the Book Sage site, so thought I’d drop in and see what you review. It seems you cast a broad net and I appreciate that. I’m always looking for books that I can enjoy, and I read widely. I’m sure everyone understands having to cut back. We’re all trying to do that in some way.

  21. I hope your parents had a nice visit and the kids were happy to be back at school, even if for just a short time. I hope they have a nice Spring Break!

What do you think of the last season of Lucifer so far? I haven’t started watching it, but we do plan to at some point.

I think I need to do a bunch of mini reviews and just be done with the ones I’m behind on. They are piling up. Good luck with getting yours written.

    Take care and happy reading!
