Life…

The week was going so well, and then my son got sick…runny nose, sore throat, cough…eek! Even though the chance of it being Covid was incredibly slim – we live in a region which has had no active cases since May- the Department of Education now requires that students who display cold/flu symptoms must be kept home, and then must be tested for Covid before returning to school, so he went for a test on Friday afternoon. Thankfully on Saturday afternoon we received a NEGATIVE result, because by then I came down with it. So I’ve spent the weekend on the couch, my husband had to do the grocery shopping and the other kids did the cooking because they don’t want me to infect them. Which is fair enough because my second daughter is in the middle of her HSC Trial exams – which are worth 50% of her final grade for her last (senior) year.

What I’m Reading This Week…

How far would you go to save your marriage?

Lou and Josh have been together for 14 years. They share two kids, a mortgage, careers and plenty of history. Now, after a particularly fraught Christmas, Lou is ready to ask herself: is this marriage worth hanging on to?

Every month for a year, Lou sets a different test for their relationship – from daily sex to brutal honesty – to help her decide if she should stay or go. Secrets are exposed, old wounds reopened and a true-to-life suburban love story unfolds.

I Give My Marriage a Year paints a sharply accurate, often hilarious picture of a modern Australian marriage. Lou and Josh are a couple on the edge, and their efforts to bring their relationship back from the brink will resonate with anyone who has ever asked themselves: is this enough?

Whose side will you take? Who deserves a second chance? And will Josh and Lou stay together or split for good?

After a puzzling death in the wild bushlands of Australia, detective Dana Russo has just hours to interrogate the prime suspect – a silent, inscrutable man found at the scene of the crime, who disappeared without trace 15 years earlier.

But where has he been? Why won’t he talk? And exactly how dangerous is he? Without conclusive evidence to prove his guilt, Dana faces a desperate race against time to persuade him to speak. But as each interview spirals with fevered intensity, Dana must reckon with her own traumatic past to reveal the shocking truth .

Identical twins only look the same …

Beautiful twin sisters Iris and Summer are startlingly alike, but beyond what the eye can see lies a darkness that sets them apart. Cynical and insecure, Iris has long been envious of open-hearted Summer’s seemingly never-ending good fortune, including her perfect husband, Adam.

Called to Thailand to help sail the family yacht to the Seychelles, Iris nurtures her own secret hopes for what might happen on the journey. But when she unexpectedly finds herself alone in the middle of the Indian Ocean, everything changes.

Now is her chance to take what she’s always wanted – the idyllic life she’s always coveted. But just how far will she go to get the life she’s dreamed about? And how will she make sure no one discovers the truth?

Written with the chilling suspense of The Girl on the Train and Before I Go to Sleep, The Girl in the Mirror is an addictive thriller about greed, lust, secrets and deadly lies.

After the first season of her true crime podcast became an overnight sensation and set an innocent man free, Rachel Krall is now a household name—and the last hope for thousands of people seeking justice. But she’s used to being recognized for her voice, not her face. Which makes it all the more unsettling when she finds a note on her car windshield, addressed to her, begging for help.

The small town of Neapolis is being torn apart by a devastating rape trial. The town’s golden boy, a swimmer destined for Olympic greatness, has been accused of raping a high school student, the beloved granddaughter of the police chief. Under pressure to make Season Three a success, Rachel throws herself into interviewing and investigating—but the mysterious letters keep showing up in unexpected places. Someone is following her, and she won’t stop until Rachel finds out what happened to her sister twenty-five years ago. Officially, Jenny Stills tragically drowned, but the letters insists she was murdered—and when Rachel starts asking questions, nobody seems to want to answer. The past and present start to collide as Rachel uncovers startling connections between the two cases that will change the course of the trial and the lives of everyone involved.

Electrifying and propulsive, The Night Swim asks: What is the price of a reputation? Can a small town ever right the wrongs of its past? And what really happened to Jenny?

  1. This year just sucks. I hate that we automatically jump to Covid suspicions instead of allergies, a cold, etc. It’s awful. And then we’re happy when it’s not Covid and yet we’re still sick. Ugh! Like, I said, awful. I hope you feel better soon and that no one else gets sick.

  2. Oh my! That has to be scary, with your son sick. So glad it was not COVID. Hope you are feeling better very soon.

I love the sound of I Give My Marriage a Year, but of course I can’t find it anywhere around here yet. I am still adding it to my list. I’m sure it will get here some day.

    Have a good week!

  3. That must have been such a relief to know that your son tested negative. And seeing how we are headed to Fall and its virus I think we’ll have frights quite often . Well, I know Australia will enter Spring soon 😉

  4. Oh my godness… Having a simple cold these days seems like a curse. Parents here in Germany have to bring a doctorly confirmation that the kid is only having the sniffles and no Covid to be allowed into class. Oh well … we will have better times again. Get well soon!

  5. So glad for that “negative” result! We were happy here, too, when they tested us, even though we didn’t have symptoms.

    Your books look good!

I am curious about the Denise Mina book, as I have enjoyed some of hers.

Have a great week, and thanks for visiting my blog.

  6. I’m very glad your son tested negative – and I hope you get over the lergy very soon. You clearly have a stack of books to read while you’re recuperating – I hope you get a chance to put your feet up a bit while you’re recovering:))

  7. Oh the itchy throat or runny nose is extra scary these times isn’t it. Good it was negative. Hope you get over it soon. I watched our 60 minutes on TV last night which included the Melbourne RED ward, such wonderful staff but definitely shows how horrible this virus is. Auckland seems to be circling their outbreak but hoping they keep it to themselves. Love the funny little cartoon. Made me chuckle.

  8. I just finished The Night Swim and really liked it! I must comment on your COVID testing experience. Here in California, I’d have to wait to get a test (not that day like you did) and our results take up to 6 days! You got them in 24 hours. What the hell is wrong with the US?! Oh wait. I know…

  9. Oh no, hope you guys feel better soon! It’s bad enough getting sick but now in the age of Covid it’s even more nerve wracking! Glad the test result was negative.

    The Night Swim sounds good.

Take care and be well this week!

  10. I hope both you and your son get better quickly! My older sister was worried about someone who was sick and was sure she had COVID. She said, “People aren’t getting other things now are they?” I sure hope so. I hope we can still get sick to other things that we know more about. Sigh. Thanks for visiting my blog.

  11. I hope you all feel better soon. I can’t imagine how worrying it would be knowing that you feel rubbish and waiting for the test results.

Hope this week is a better week for you.

  12. I’m glad you got a negative test and hope you guys are all feeling better soon!! My husband and I have been stressing out the same way these last months — he had a regular cold and I’ve had allergy attacks and migraines and every time there’s the fear it’s not actually those.

  14. I’m so glad you didn’t have Covid, and hope you’re feeling better soon. I just finished listening to The Night Swim and seem to be in the minority because I didn’t care for it at all. I’ll look forward to hearing what you think of The Girl in the Mirror. I have that one coming up. Get well and have a great week!

  15. I’m sorry you’ve gotten colds. I’m dreading fall allergy season because I’m sure people will think I am going out while I am sick. Pray you all feel better soon.

  17. I worry about what this winter will be like. I get sinus crud every year but this year there will be the question of whether it is COVID or not. We can’t keep up with testing in my state now I can’t imagine what it will be like this winter. It looks like you had a good reading week.

  18. I Give my Marriage a Year sounds like such a brilliantly funny and honest read, I’ve been enjoying those funny, raw type reads of late and I’ll have to grab a copy. I can imagine it’s one of those reflective books that encourages you to look at your own life as well. So sorry you’ve been unwell and hope your son is on the mend as well. I’m in Victoria, so many of us are all at home with the sniffles as well. My husband is an essential worker and luckily his workplace is still operating and I’m so thankful that everyone is wearing masks to reduce the risk of infection. Rest up honey and hope you’re feeling better soon!
