Life…
The past week started reasonably well but has since spiralled into messy.
My son’s new (and expensive) basketball boots were stolen from the stadium.
My 70yo+ mother has a sore throat (but no other symptoms) so she’s gone on holiday anyway.
The panic buying has moved beyond basics like toilet paper, soaps, and staples like rice and flour, and now everything is in short supply, which is making grocery shopping a challenge.
My daughter just came home from school sick (no Coronavirus symptoms, just very pale with nausea).
All the stress has caused a flare up of my health condition.
I had to backdate reviews I’ve posted, and one I’ve just had to post a place marker because I haven’t had the time or energy to get the review finished, and I am late getting this post up too for the same reasons.
Ok that’s enough whining from me.
Wash your hands, do good, stay well xx

What I’m Reading This Week…
Little Wonders by Kare Rorick
Her mommy meltdown is seen around the world!
When Quinn Barrett’s son refuses to wear his hand-crafted costume to the Little Wonders Preschool Happy Halloween Parade and Dance Party she loses it — complete with stomping, screaming, and costume-destruction galore. Not her best day. And caught on viral video. Yep, “Halloween Mom” is now internet famous.
The posting culprit: tattooed, blue-haired, west-coast transplant Daisy McGulch, out of place in the posh New England town and unable to blend with the other perfect mommies of Little Wonders Preschool.
While she couldn’t care less about organic snacks (paleo-preferred) or the winter quarters of the Little Wonders chickens, she’s not about to admit she’s the one who accidently brought Quinn’s worst moment to the entire world—she’d be kicked out of town!
But when Quinn and Daisy find themselves unlikely cohorts in the fight for Little Wonders Parents Association supremacy, they also discover they have more in common than they expected…but the internet is forever. Can Quinn live down her new reputation? And how far will Daisy go to keep the truth from coming to light?
Hilarious, clever, and unforgettable, Little Wonders offers a glimpse into the high-pressure world of modern momming, with natural toys, scrutinized playdates, PTA politics, and social media gone amok.

The Keeper by Jessica Moor
An addictive literary thriller about a crime as shocking as it is commonplace
When Katie Straw’s body is pulled from the waters of the local suicide spot, the police are ready to write it off as a standard-issue female suicide. But the residents of the domestic violence shelter where Katie worked disagree. These women have spent weeks or even years waiting for the men they’re running from to catch up with them. They know immediately: This was murder.
Still, Detective Dan Whitworth and his team expect an open-and-shut case–until they discover evidence that suggests Katie wasn’t who she appeared. Weaving together the investigation with Katie’s final months as it barrels toward the truth, The Keeper is a riveting mystery and a searing examination of violence against women and the structures that allow it to continue, marking the debut of an incredible new voice in crime fiction.

The Banskia Bay Beach Shack by Sandie Docker
A year is a long time in the memory of a small town. Stories get twisted, truths become warped, history is rewritten.
MYSTERIES
When Laura discovers an old photo of her grandmother, Lillian, with an intriguing inscription on the back, she heads to the sleepy seaside town of Banksia Bay to learn the truth of Lillian’s past. But when she arrives, Laura finds a community where everyone seems to be hiding something.
SECRETS
Virginia, owner of the iconic Beach Shack café, has kept her past buried for sixty years. As Laura slowly uncovers the tragic fragments of that summer so long ago, Virginia must decide whether to hold on to her secrets or set the truth free.
LIES
Young Gigi and Lily come from different worlds but forge an unbreakable bond – the ‘Sisters of Summer’. But in 1961 a chain of events is set off that reaches far into the future. One lie told. One lie to set someone free. One lie that changes the course of so many lives.
Welcome to the Banksia Bay Beach Shack, where first love is found and last chances are taken.

The Origin of Me by Bernard Gallate
Lincoln Locke’s fifteen-year-old life is turned upside down when he’s thrust into bachelor-pad living with his father, after his parents’ marriage breaks up, and into an exclusive new school. Crestfield Academy offers Lincoln a new set of peers – the crème de la crème of gifted individuals, who also happen to be financially loaded – and a place on the swim relay team with a bunch of thugs in Speedos. Homunculus, the little voice inside his head, doesn’t make life any easier; nor does Lincoln’s growing awareness of a genetic anomaly that threatens to humiliate him at every turn.
On a search for answers to big LIFE questions, he turns to the hallowed school library, where he spies a nineteenth-century memoir, My One Redeeming Affliction by Edwin Stroud, a one-time star of Melinkoff’s Astonishing Assembly of Freaks. As Lincoln slowly reads this peculiar, life-changing book, the past reaches into his present in fascinating and alarming ways.
Ways that defy imagination…
Audacious, funny and wonderfully inventive, The Origin of Me is a song to friendship, to young love, to the joy of imagination, and to celebrating differences.

How very annoying about the boots! And no… I don’t think you’re whining – we’re suddenly pitchforked into the middle of a situation that no one has dealt with before. Thank goodness for books and you have got a really intriguing variety there. I hope the coming week is a good one, Shelleyrae – take care.

We want to hear your troubles; that is why we have friends. It’s a deeply troubling time. We are headed to the store when it opens. I’m not sure what we will see.
Take care.

I’m sorry you’ve had such a challenging week. I fear we have more of those to come. Keeper looks like a good thriller to escape into right now. I know escape is what I’m craving.

Stay safe! I am curious about The Keeper…and I can relate to your frustration about shopping.
I hope your daughter feels better soon; my granddaughter has something, too, but not coronavirus related.
Have a great week.

Do take care. This is quite a stressful time. I am reading/listening to a lot of audiobooks and am changing planned reading and blogging for these. I will have to switch back to review books in a couple of days if I don’t want those posts to be late. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

I feel it’s okay to whine this week. So much change, so quickly … all of it bad. Try to diffuse the stress as best you can. And stay well.

Sorry it was a stressful week. I hope everybody feels better soon. The grocery stores here are empty too. I had to drive around to a bunch of different ones to find what I needed for the dog and baby. I hope everyone has hoarded what they needed and can calm down now.

Here in Germany it is the same. As if most of them left their brain at home before going to the supermarket. I mean do they plan on eating toilet paper when they run out of all the cans, noodles etc, they´ve bought? Gosh … I am sorry that the boots got stolen. I know how that feels. Something like that happened to me when I was a kid and my father was super angry when he found out. Stay safe and well!

I’m coming to the meme three days later for the same reasons as you in different format! Trying to get all the groceries I needed in and then medicines which were paramount. Hoping the electricity wont go out. Just keeping on top of things.
Stay safe.

I think a lot of us are really feeling the upheaval. Be easy on yourself. Our health (individual and collective) and our families are the most important things. Blogs can wait.
