Life…
I’m sure you are sick of weather reports from me – in the last week we’ve experienced hail, a storm with severe winds that uprooted trees, 40c (104F) degree days, and it’s still 25c (77F) at 3am, a nearby fire has reignited, though for the moment is controlled, while around hundred continue to burn across the country- in summary it’s still insane here.
It’s also a long weekend here for Australia Day, but celebrating is complicated as debate about the implications of the date it’s held on rages. I personally support change.
Unbelievably it’s also the last Monday of the month already, so it’s time for a challenge update
(eek not the best start to the year!)

What I’m Reading This Week…
It’s Nina Landry’s birthday, and she’s supposed to have her kids ready to leave in a few hours for a Christmas holiday in Florida with her new boyfriend, but her fifteen-year-old daughter Charlie spent the night at a friend’s and hasn’t come home yet. Not by ten a.m., not by eleven. Nina is getting angry—they have a plane to catch, and Charlie hasn’t even bothered to pack. As time passes, though slower and slower by the minute, Nina becomes uneasy. Her anger gives way to worry, and that worry quickly builds into panic.
By one p.m., she’s wondering, has Charlie run away, or has something far worse happened? And why won’t anyone—not the cops, not Charlie’s friends, not Charlie’s father—take her disappearance seriously?
As day turns to night on their home of Sandling Island sixty miles from London, and a series of ominous secrets leads Nina from sickening suspicion to deadly certainty, the question becomes less whether she and her daughter will leave the island in time and more whether they’ll ever leave it again.
In “Losing You,” the newest thriller from the long-acclaimed master of psychological suspense, Nicci French unravels one mother’s life and replaces it with every mother’s worst nightmare.

The Girl With the Gold Bikini by Lisa Walker
Whenever I see a girl with a gold bikini, I think of Princess Leia. Here on the Gold Coast, gold bikinis are common, so I think of Princess Leia a lot.
Eighteen-year-old Olivia Grace has deferred her law degree and ducked out of her friends’ gap-year tour of Asia. Instead, she’s fulfilling her childhood dream of becoming a private investigator, following in the footsteps of Nancy Drew and Veronica Mars – who taught her everything she knows, including a solid line in quick-quipping repartee, the importance of a handbag full of disguises, and a way of mixing business with inconvenient chemistry.
Playing Watson to the Sherlock of her childhood friend, detective agency owner Rosco (once the Han Solo to her Princess Leia), Olivia pursues a routine cheating husband case from the glitzy Gold Coast to Insta-perfect Byron Bay, where she faces yoga wars, dirty whale activism, and a guru who’s kind of a creep.
Olivia Grace is a teenage screwball heroine for the #metoo era, and The Girl with the Gold Bikini is a body-positive detective romp, rich with pop-culture pleasures.

The Boundary Fence by Alissa Callen
Healing doesn’t just take time, it takes courage…
The scars country vet Ella Quinlivan hides are not solely on the outside. Men are off limits. She fills her world with her friends, work and the colourful community of small town Woodlea. She also becomes custodian of a sandstone cottage of an elderly friend whose teenage daughter went missing two decades ago.
With a broken marriage behind him, Saul Armstrong is determined to recapture his dreams by bringing American bison to the Australian bush. He intends to stick to his side of the high wire fence that divides his farm from his distracting new neighbour, Ella.
When Saul calls out Ella for a bison emergency she isn’t just thrown out of her comfort zone by dealing with an unfamiliar animal. Slow-smiling and guarded Saul stirs emotions she’d long ago discarded.
As the summer heat parches the landscape and dust obscures the sun, hidden secrets come to light. Not only will Ella and Saul be tested, the connection forged between them will be threatened. Will love be enough to guarantee their freedom or will fear continue to dictate the direction their lives?

Mr Nobody by Catherine Steadman
Who is Mr. Nobody?
When a man is found on a British beach, drifting in and out of consciousness, with no identification and unable to speak, interest in him is sparked immediately. From the hospital staff who find themselves inexplicably drawn to him, to international medical experts who are baffled by him, to the national press who call him Mr. Nobody, everyone wants answers. Who is this man? And what happened to him?
Some memories are best forgotten.
Neuropsychiatrist Dr. Emma Lewis is asked to assess the patient in a small town deep in the English countryside. This is her field of expertise, this is the chance she’s been waiting for, and this case could make her name known across the world. But therein lies the danger. Emma left this same town fourteen years ago and has taken great pains to cover all traces of her past since then.
Places aren’t haunted . . . people are.
But now something—or someone—is calling her back. And the more time she spends with her patient, the more alarmed she becomes that he knows the one thing about her that nobody is supposed to know

Thanks for stopping by!
Thank you for the fire update. It seems it gets reported on here, but not as much as a few weeks ago. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I cannot even fathom a 220 book goal so I’m impressed by your reading so far 🙂

I feel so bad that your country is getting rocked so hard by all this weather. 😦 Hopefully there is a return to normalcy soon.

You’re doing great with your reading.
I hope the weather gets back to normal soon, that is scary about the fires.

Hope the weather & fires calm there. We’ve been watching the Australian Open from Canada … and trying to send our cooler temps your way. Enjoy your reading week.

I don’t know how they can play in this heat, I feel like I’m risking heatstroke just walking to the letterbox!

Some motivator goodreads is, lol! I’ve decided I won’t look at my progress until I am ahead or caught up. I’m very behind at the moment. Oops.
Hope you enjoy your weekend. It’s crazy reading about all the doomsday weather reports out there. I fear we are past the point of no return and yet we do nothing at a global or national level to change.

I hope the weather cools and they finally put all the fires out! I just saw that three firefighters from the US died over there. The whole situation is so sad!
Good luck on your reading challenge and happy reading! 🙂

Ugh. The vagarities of the weather there have been horrible. I’m still continuing to send good thoughts and prayers to Australia. I hope you have some relief soon.
I saw that you had already read thirteen books, and I thought you’d be very happy. But then I saw your goal. That is a very challenging goal. Good luck!
I want to take a look at your nonfiction challenge posts today. I finished Boys in the Boat last week, and it is a book I’ve had recommended to me a dozen times. I’m not sure why I waited so long to read it. I should make a list of nonfiction recommended to me that I have avoided. I bet it would be long.
I hope things look better in your country soon.

I think you are doing great with your reading. We are only at the end of the first month of the year. Losing You looks really good. I hope you enjoy your books.

You know I don’t tire of your weather reports as the situation in your country is very concerning and I want to know that you are safe! Let’s hope that next week will bring lots of rain!

Your progress for the challenges is great…I am still reading my first nonfiction book for that challenge, but I go back and forth between nonfiction and fiction.
I have pre-ordered Losing You…can’t wait to read it.
Enjoy your week.

What crazy weather! Here too, but not to those extremes! Hope it gets better…
Lots of great books for your week ahead. You’ve made me add to my TBR pile AGAIN! I read your review on Daisy Jones and I am glad you liked it. I had heard so much praise for it, but it just wasn’t clicking for me. Then it was on sale on Kindle and I decided to try it. I just read a little sample and still wasn’t that into it, but I really didn’t read enough and now you’ve made me feel much better about really giving it the attention that it needs.
Have a great week!

Your country is really going through a lot right now- the fires and the Australia Day questions. It’s such a stressful time now, seems like, with all these things happening in the world. We’re so polarized in the US right now too, although we don’t have anything going on like those fires! My heart goes out to all those affected, the wildlife, and all of it.
I personally hate it when it stays hot like that at night. 77 at 3am?? Ugh.
Take care and hope you have a good week!

I don’t think I could survive summer in Australia. It gets to 104 here occasionally, but it’s pretty rare. I hope the fire gets put out soon. Have a great week!

Definitely going to check out your Infinity Son review, I adore Adam Silvera! I’ve seen mixed reviews on it as a fantasy novel as opposed to his contemporary we’re used too. Looks like you’ve had a good week too! :’)

I’ve had my eye on Mr Nobody! I liked but didn’t love Something in the Water, but I’m a sucker and always want to give authors another chance 🙂

I’m at the other end of the world but following Australia weather and now this virus (three children in Melbourne). The losses so far are so heart breaking I don’t know how you are all coping. Prayers for better times.

My prayers are still with Australia in hopes the fires will all be under control–and out- soon. Infinity Son is getting a lot of press right now, and it’s one I hope to read. I am glad you liked it, although it does sound like it has some room for improvement. I hope the trilogy gets better as it goes. I hope you enjoy your current reads! Have a great week!

And here I thought Texas weather was insane! I’m constantly keeping Australia in my thoughts and prayers because of the fires.
I haven’t read any of those books but they look like good ones, I hope you enjoy them!
I’m currently reading Peter Pan, The Darkest Path by Jeff Hirsch, and Blackout by Robison Wells.

It looks like you are reading some great stuff and not too far behind at all. I’m so sorry about the weather and fires; it is so difficult.
I hope things improve and you have a lovely week with some great books to read!

You can keep us updated on the bushfires as long as you want to tell us about it. It will never get boring to hear from you about how the situation is. Sure, it is still kind of frightening but on the other hand good to know that you and your family are obviously safe. Despite that, happy reading and have a (hopefully) great week.

Our weather has been weird too – thunderstorms with tornadoes, then the northern part of the state got some snow flurries on Friday and tomorrow we are expected to be near 70F. You have some good looking books on your list. I hope you’ve enjoyed them.
