Life…
It’s been raining here for the last 24 hours on and off, enough in my area that the fires that have been burning since November are finally considered to be extinguished, though along the east coast of the country, 69 fires continue to burn, 20 of which are uncontrolled. And of course because Australia is a land of extremes, in the North there are floods, and inland several towns have been impacted by a massive dust storm. Meanwhile Puerto Rico has been hit by earthquakes, and a swathe of the US mainland is experiencing a series of severe storms, Indonesia has experienced catastrophic flooding, there was a deadly avalanche in Pakistan, and a volcano is threatening to erupt in the Phillipines. It’s insane, all of it!
On a slightly lighter note, hubby is back at work, and we are still watching Monk in the evenings. The younger kids have only about 10 days til the start of the new school year so this week we need to get organised, they will be entering Year 12, Year 10, and Year 9. Meanwhile my oldest daughter is planning a trip to Greece with a friend later this year. My plans this week involve the aforementioned organising, reading, blogging, and counting down the days til Picard premieres on January 24th (on Amazon Prime here in Australia), are you looking forward to it?
If you are in the US, click here for the trailer (stupid georestrctions)

What I’m Reading This Week…
Infinity Son by Adam Silvera
Balancing epic and intensely personal stakes, bestselling author Adam Silvera’s Infinity Son is a gritty, fast-paced adventure about two brothers caught up in a magical war generations in the making.
Growing up in New York, brothers Emil and Brighton always idolized the Spell Walkers—a vigilante group sworn to rid the world of specters. While the Spell Walkers and other celestials are born with powers, specters take them, violently stealing the essence of endangered magical creatures.
Brighton wishes he had a power so he could join the fray. Emil just wants the fighting to stop. The cycle of violence has taken a toll, making it harder for anyone with a power to live peacefully and openly. In this climate of fear, a gang of specters has been growing bolder by the day.
Then, in a brawl after a protest, Emil manifests a power of his own—one that puts him right at the heart of the conflict and sets him up to be the heroic Spell Walker Brighton always wanted to be.
Brotherhood, love, and loyalty will be put to the test, and no one will escape the fight unscathed.

Saving Missy by Beth Morrey
Boy meets girl. Girl meets boy. Woman meets dog…
The world has changed around Missy Carmichael. At seventy-nine, she’s estranged from her daughter, her son and only grandson live across the world in Australia, and her great love is gone. Missy spends her days with a sip of sherry, scrubbing the kitchen in her big empty house and reliving her past–though it’s her mistakes, and secrets, that she allows to shine brightest. The last thing Missy expects is for two perfect strangers and one spirited dog to break through her prickly exterior and show Missy just how much love she still has to give. Filled with wry laughter and deep insights into the stories we tell ourselves, The Love Story of Missy Carmichael shows us it’s never too late to teach an old dog new tricks. It’s never too late to love.

The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave
After a storm has killed off all the island’s men, two women in a 1600s Norwegian coastal village struggle to survive against both natural forces and the men who have been sent to rid the community of alleged witchcraft.
Finnmark, Norway, 1617. Twenty-year-old Maren Bergensdatter stands on the craggy coast, watching the sea break into a sudden and reckless storm. Forty fishermen, including her brother and father, are drowned and left broken on the rocks below. With the menfolk wiped out, the women of the tiny Northern town of Vardø must fend for themselves.
Three years later, a sinister figure arrives. Absalom Cornet comes from Scotland, where he burned witches in the northern isles. He brings with him his young Norwegian wife, Ursa, who is both heady with her husband’s authority and terrified by it. In Vardø, and in Maren, Ursa sees something she has never seen before: independent women. But Absalom sees only a place untouched by God and flooded with a mighty evil.
As Maren and Ursa are pushed together and are drawn to one another in ways that surprise them both, the island begins to close in on them with Absalom’s iron rule threatening Vardø’s very existence.
Inspired by the real events of the Vardø storm and the 1620 witch trials, THE MERCIES is a feminist story of love, evil, and obsession, set at the edge of civilization.

The Lawson Sisters by Janet Gover
A heartfelt and compelling story of family, secrets and second chances, set in the heart of the beautiful Hunter Valley of NSW, from an award-winning new voice in Australian fiction.
A fractured family. Guilty secrets. Can the Lawson legacy be saved?
For many years Elizabeth Lawson has battled single-handedly to run the family’s historic horse stud in memory of her beloved father. But a devastating loss puts her dreams at risk. With no options left, Liz is forced to turn to her estranged sister Kayla for help.
Kayla has built a new life in the city as a wedding planner, far removed from the stableyard sweat and dust of her rural upbringing. She never thought she’d go back. But when Liz calls out of the blue, Kayla forms a plan that could save their childhood home.
Kayla’s return forces Liz to confront her past … and her future, in the shape of Mitch, her first and only love, who still watches over her from the other side of the creek.
But Liz still hides a terrible secret. When Kayla learns the truth, will the Lawson sisters find common ground or will their conflict splinter the family once again?

Saving Missy reminds me a bit of A Man Called Ove, I think I’d like to get that book. The Lawson Sisters sounds good to me as well
Picard?! I’d love to watch it but we do t have cable or internet so I’ll be awaiting the library to get it months from now.
I’m working on my post for your non fiction challenge.

All these natural disasters are terrifying. But what’s more terrifying is that we have no agreed long-term plan for how to prevent / reduce these occurrences. We still have people who call all these a hoax. Ugh!
Looks like you have some very busy days coming up. How lovely that your daughter is looking to make a trip to Greece – you’ll have to share more about that! 🙂

Our PM is a denialist, which is why the fires got so out of control here.

My husband has been talking about Picard for over a year and I think we’ve watched the trailer for it like 10 times. He’s so excited I think he might pee himself when he actually gets to watch it. I’m looking forward to it too, however. Looks like some great books you have read and reviewed. I need to add them to my list.
We’ve been watching about the wildfires. I have a friend in Australia and she updates on Facebook some. She’s not near the fires but watching them because family and friends are there.
All the weather stuff is crazy.

I’m very happy the rains have put the fires near you out. I hope they are all out soon. Weather has been strange all over the world. We’ve had many huge hurricanes near us in the last ten years, storms that once might only occur every hundred years.
It is certainly going to get busy around your house soon. I don’t know how you can keep up with all the activities they must be busy with. But perhaps they are able to do most of that themselves.
I shall look for Saving Missy. Sadly not here yet. Sigh. At least I can add it to my list to look for later.
Picard won’t work for me either. I wonder if Picard will be on Amazon Prime here. Unlikely, I think, or the video would have worked.
Have a great week!

I’m so glad the rain has “helped” the fires, but hope that you don’t get flooding now. The weather you are having there is frightening!
I’ve been counting the days until Picard too!! I just love him and the series too! I went to the most boring broadway production, a serious drama, just to see Patrick Stewart on stage. There was a guy behind me who began to snore, very loudly, and the whole theatre was very amused. The stage actors were not.
Hope you have a great week ahead!

Climate/weather issues are frightening…but I’m glad that you have some rain now to help a little.
My son and his wife just got back from Australia…they loved their time there (and in New Zealand).
Your books look tempting. Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my blog.

The news is full of natural disasters and it has been running non stop inside my head for the past month. So much that I am getting dreams (or should I call them nightmares) about them often! Sigh. I wish things settle down so that I can get back to dreaming about books and blogging again.
I hope you have a great week ahead.

The news reports here in UK are misleading – they are giving the impression the rain has extinguished all the fires.

Oooh! Infinity Son and The Mercies both sound amazing. I’m so glad at least some of the fires have been extinguished. I’m in the US and feel so incredibly helpless watching all the devastation unfold. It’s heartbreaking.

I’m glad to hear the situation is improving a bit. Yes the weather is off its rocker. We have been fortunate to have warmer weather with rain every 3-4 days but very pleasant. We are getting a freezing period the next 3 days but then hopefully back to milder temps.
I hope you have a good week with back to work, organizing and of course – reading!

I was so pleased to hear it was beginning to rain in Australia, but know that it doesn’t fix everything and sometimes causes more trouble (we had a horrible debris flow in January 2018 right after a huge fire that killed 23). But, fewer fires means they can focus resources on those that are left. Hard to imagine climate deniers, isn’t it?!

Glad the fires near you are extinguished- here’s hoping the rest of them follow soon. And you’re right- it’s kinda scary how many catastrophes are taking place. Crazy times.
I bet Picard will be a fun show!

I am relieved to hear the fires near you have been put out. Rain after fires can be just as devastating in their own way after the damage from the fires. So many catastrophic events . . . I hope your children enjoy these final days of vacation before starting school again. Mine has a holiday tomorrow, although she still has her dance classes in the evening. I hope you are enjoying your current reads! I am interested in The Mercies, in particular. I hope you have a great week, Shellyrae!

Mother Nature certainly has beaten up many areas of the world lately. Here’s hoping she settles down for a bit.
I’m interested in seeing Picard, too. Though I didn’t watch shows after The Next Generation, Picard has always been a character of interest to me.
Great list of books. The Lawson Sisters sounds good.
Enjoy your week.

I love Monk and watched the show every week while it was on and have watched all the seasons a few times since it was cancelled.
I’m not a Star Trek fan anymore, but my two sons are.
I have the audio of The Love Story of Missy Carmichael by Beth Morrey on my list, it sounds really good.

I’m happy to hear the fires are getting dowsed. Global warming is wrecking havoc on the world! I fear things will get worse, but I know God won’t let man completely ruin the earth. Something has to give! At least you get some lighter nights watching Monk! I remember it being a fun show whenever I watched. Greece! You daughter is fortunate and I hope she has a great time. Good look with prepping for school!
The Lawson Sisters sounds like something I’d love. It reminds me a little of McLeod’s Daughter’s, an Aussie show I used to watch a few years back. I hope you enjoy the story. I’m going to see if I can get a hold of it here in the US. 🙂
