Life…

It’s not even summer yet but high temperatures and wind are currently fanning several fires in my area. As you can see in the map below, my town of Taree (about 350km north of Sydney in NSW) is currently ringed by blazes burning through the bush, blanketing us with smoke. Thankfully we are not facing any direct threat, but several areas around us have been evacuated, and some property, and wildlife, has been lost. My husband works right where that red diamond is … about a 20 minute drive south from us, and may end up with a few days off due to road closures. Hopefully the rural fire service will get them under control soon though.

On a lighter note, I’m taking part in Nonfiction November this month, I’ll be posting every Friday in reply to the prompts, and reading and reviewing as many non fiction books as I can. Are you taking part?

What I’m Reading This Week

You Don’t Know Me by Sarah Foster

He’s guarding a dark secret, but so is she.

Lizzie Burdett was eighteen when she vanished, and Noah Carruso has never forgotten her. She was his first crush, his unrequited love. She was also his brother’s girlfriend.

Tom Carruso hasn’t been home in over a decade. He left soon after Lizzie disappeared, under a darkening cloud of suspicion, and now he’s back for the inquest into Lizzie’s death – intent on telling his side of the story.

As the inquest looms, Noah meets Alice Pryce on holiday. They fall for each other fast and hard, but Noah can’t bear to tell Alice his deepest fears. And Alice is equally stricken – she carries a terrible secret of her own.

Is the truth worth telling if it will destroy everything?

The Changing Room by Christine Sykes

Anna is in her sixties with her dream job and the man to match. Claire is a fourty-six-year-old philanthropist with a picture-perfect family. And then there is Molly, who has seen more strife in her twenty years than anyone should, but has more love to give than most.

When their lives are turned upside down, these women must discover how to start over amid a world of pain. Guided by Suitability, a clothing an styling service for disadvantaged women, Anna, Claire and Molly find the courage to rebuild their lives – with a few outfit changes along the way.

Inspired by the experiences of the women behind the charity Dress for Success, The Changing Room proves that sometimes losing everything leads you towards freedom, and that hope can be found even in the unlikeliest of places.

Confessions of a Bookseller by Shaun Bythell

“Do you have a list of your books, or do I just have to stare at them?” Shaun Bythell is the owner of The Bookshop in Wigtown, Scotland. With more than a mile of shelving, real log fires in the shop and the sea lapping nearby, the shop should be an idyll for bookworms. Unfortunately, Shaun also has to contend with bizarre requests from people who don’t understand what a shop is, home invasions during the Wigtown Book Festival and Granny, his neurotic Italian assistant who likes digging for river mud to make poultices. The Diary of a Bookseller (soon to be a major TV series) introduced us to the joys and frustrations of life lived in books. Sardonic and sympathetic in equal measure, Confessions of a Bookseller will reunite readers with the characters they’ve come to know and love.

And my nod to Halloween…

Slayer by Kiersten White

Into every generation a Slayer is born…

Nina and her twin sister, Artemis, are far from normal. It’s hard to be when you grow up at the Watcher’s Academy, which is a bit different from your average boarding school. Here teens are trained as guides for Slayers—girls gifted with supernatural strength to fight the forces of darkness. But while Nina’s mother is a prominent member of the Watcher’s Council, Nina has never embraced the violent Watcher lifestyle. Instead she follows her instincts to heal, carving out a place for herself as the school medic.

Until the day Nina’s life changes forever.

Thanks to Buffy, the famous (and infamous) Slayer that Nina’s father died protecting, Nina is not only the newest Chosen One—she’s the last Slayer, ever. Period.

As Nina hones her skills with her Watcher-in-training, Leo, there’s plenty to keep her occupied: a monster fighting ring, a demon who eats happiness, a shadowy figure that keeps popping up in Nina’s dreams…

But it’s not until bodies start turning up that Nina’s new powers will truly be tested—because someone she loves might be next.

One thing is clear: Being Chosen is easy. Making choices is hard.

  2. Those fires are so scary. I hope you continue to stay safe. We’ve been in severe drought conditions but have had a little rain so now it’s just moderate drought.

Confessions of a Bookseller sounds fun!

  5. I hope you stay safe. I don’t read much nonfiction other than quilting or knitting books or cook books regularly. I read a lot on a topic when I am researching something. But mostly I want to read for pleasure which is mostly not nonfiction. Good luck and enjoy your reads!

  6. Urg! I hate the thought of those fires. While we don’t often get such events in the UK – I vividly recall the summer of 1976 when the hill behind where my ex-mother-in-law lived was on fire and we were listening to the police band as the smoke drifted across the back garden, to see if she would need to start evacuating the house… The wind changed and her house was okay, but it was a horrible experience. I very much hope the fires are soon put out!

  7. Fires are rough. I heard something great in a play today, that basically said ‘Science doesn’t care if we’re bothered’. Glad that we have each other to look after and the one above.

  10. Congratulations on completing all of your reading challenges, woohoo! I’m also participating in the Nonfiction November reading challenge, but I think it was originally started by A Book Olive, so I’m participating over there. Looking forward to seeing what you’re reading.

  11. Those fires are so awful and the wind sure is a threat. I remember reading a book about fire in Australia – I think by Fiona Lowe, Home Fires it was powerful and gave an insight into it.

  15. I’m sorry to hear you’re having a rash of fires in your area too! It’s unsettling, but it seems to be the new normal for California this time of year thanks to global warming. I hope you stay safe!

You Don’t Know Me looks good. Happy reading! :))

  16. You have NO IDEA how much I envy you. 158 read books, holy smokes! Congrats. Hopefully, the fire will spare you. It is awful to watch the news and see all the fires that burn through California at the moment, knowing that I was there and now everything is up in flames. So, I can imagine how it must be for you with the fires around you. Like the cover of The Changing Room.
