It’s 2014! Happy New Year!

I enjoyed watching the fireworks on the riverbank with my family on New Years Eve and then a leisurely day at the beach with friends on New Years Day – though it ended rather abruptly when my youngest was stung by a bluebottle jellyfish.

I’ve caught up a little this week but I still haven’t been working too hard. Hubby goes back to work Monday so things should settle down a bit though I  have Aleah’s 11th birthday on Wednesday, and of course the children are still home on school holidays til February.

What I Read Last Week

Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy by Helen Fielding

Monkey Business by Kathryn Ledson

The Girl in the Yellow Vest by Loretta Hill

What I Am Reading Today

Calexa Rose Dunhill was just fourteen when she woke in a cemetery. Bruised, bloody and left for dead, with no memory of her previous life, she took a new name from the headstones that surrounded her. Now, three years on, Calexa still lives in Dunhill Cemetery, struggling with the desire to know her true identity – and the all-consuming fear of what she might discover when she does. Then, when she witnesses a gang of teenagers staging a stunt that goes horribly, fatally wrong, Calexa Rose Dunhill discovers she has a unique ability. One she cannot control…

What I want to say is that suicide is my choice. No-one else is to blame. Man seeks beautiful woman for the journey of a lifetime: Will you help me to die?’ When Probation Officer Cate Austin is given her new assignment, she faces the highest-profile case of her career. Alice Mariani is charged with assisted suicide and Cate must recommend a sentence. Alice insists her story is one of misinterpreted love, forcing those around her to analyse their own lives. Who is to decide what is normal and when does loyalty turn to obsession? Investigating the loophole that lies between murder and euthanasia, Cate must now meet the woman who agreed to comply with her lover’s final request. Shocking revelations expose bitter truths that can no longer be ignored.

Walter and Alice are expecting their first baby, but their timing is a bit off: Walter, once a successful loan officer, has been unexpectedly downsized. They ve had to relocate to Florida so that they can live rent-free in Alice s deceased aunt s condo. When Alice s brother-in-law Mid offers Walter a job, he literally can t refuse. But what he doesn t know about the nature of the job, about the depth of Mid s shady dealings, about what he s really supposed to be doing far outweighs what he does know. And soon enough, things escalate so out of control that Walter is riding shotgun with Mid in a bright yellow Camaro chased by the police.Drew Perry paints a landscape of weird and beautiful Florida and its inhabitants all wholly original and hilarious, and utterly believable. And at the center is a portrait of a father-to-be who is paralyzed by the idea of taking responsibility for another human life when he can t seem to manage his own. Kids These Days takes perfect aim at the two sides of impending fatherhood abject terror and unconditional love.

79-year-old Martha Anderson dreams of escaping her care home and robbing a bank. She has no intention of spending the rest of her days in an armchair and is determined to fund her way to a much more exciting life-style. Along with her four oldest friends – otherwise known as the League of Pensioners – Martha decides to rebel against all of the rules imposed upon them. Together, they cause an uproar with their antics: protesting against early bedtimes and plastic meals. As the elderly friends become more daring, their activities escalate and they come up with a cunning plan to break out of the care home and land themselves in a far more attractive Stockholm establishment. With the aid of their Zimmer frames, they resolve to stand up for old aged pensioners everywhere – Robin Hood style. And that’s when the adventure really takes off . .

Lucy Black must protect the young and vulnerable…but can she protect herself? Late December. A sixteen-year-old girl is found dead on a train line. Detective Sergeant Lucy Black is called to identify the body. The only clues to the dead teenager’s last movements are stored in her mobile phone and on social media – and it soon becomes clear that her ‘friends’ were not as trustworthy as she thought. Lucy is no stranger to death: she is still haunted by the memory of child she failed to save, and the killer she failed to put behind bars. And with a new boss scrutinizing her every move, she is determined that – this time – she will leave no margin for error. Hurt is a tense crime thriller about how, in the hands of a predator, trust can turn into terror.

  1. You always read so widely, I was just looking at all your reviews over on Amazon. Amazing! Have another great reading week. I am going to try and ace a couple of reads of The Eclectic Reader challenge this week!

  2. I love your list of books. I read the Sacrificial Man some years ago and thought it was an excellent read an unusual subject matter but one that is handled very well by Ruth Dugdall. Hurt is on my list and I’m liking the look of Cemetery Girl. I will be back to see the review 🙂

  3. It sounds like you saw the New Year in in a very relaxed manner.
I so nearly bought The Little Old Lady Who Broke All The Rules before the new year in eBook format but decided not too instead – I have far too many books to work through right now! I’d love to know how you find it.
    Happy Reading!

  5. Cemetery Girl looks good!!!

The beach!! I can’t imagine right now. It is -12 here and is supposed to get to -35 by tomorrow.

I just had a nice visit with friends who moved to Perth. They are in town visiting for a few months before they return to Australia; I hadn’t seen them in 8 years! I promised my friend that I would read some Australian authors this year, and she recommended The Slap as a book to start with. 🙂

  6. That pic of the surf looks so inviting, especially since it’s about 0 degrees here today and snow is everywhere! The beach sounds pretty good! Sorry to hear about the jellyfish though, that’s awful.

I think Kids These Days looks like fun, and a pretty cover. Enjoy your week!

  7. Kids These Days sounds interesting. There are so many books about motherhood, but not as many about becoming a dad (even if it is served with a side of zany crime!)

    Have a wonderful week!

  10. It looks like you had a good and busy kick off to 2014. I like your reading variety. I hope this week has been good too. (I thought I had visited early in the week but I don’t see a comment so maybe I got distracted.)
