It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

The Its Monday! What Are You Reading meme is hosted at Book Journey.

Life…

Chaos reigns!

My schedule has been decimated this week, I barely got a moment to myself to read let alone work on reviews and this week offers no respite.

With just three days til the kids finish school for the seven weeks of summer holidays, I have three school Christmas parties, a Scouts and Cubs Christmas party and a gymnastics party to cook for. That’s not too bad – a few dozen cupcakes and slices aren’t too difficult, but Wednesday evening is my youngest son’s 8th birthday party – we are taking 9 of his friends bowling and Jasiah has requested I make a cake shaped like a bowling pin with a bowling ball!  At least I don’t have to cook tomorrow when I meet my girlfriends for Christmas lunch!

I have yet to actually do any Christmas present shopping (or birthday present shopping)  and this Friday we are going camping for the weekend with friends to celebrate my husband’s birthday, which is on Monday. I could go on but I am sure you are busy too and don’t have the time to read it all!

What I Am Reading Today

Murder comes well-seasoned in this charming mystery featuring a smart and spunky new amateur sleuth, small-town Georgia spice shop owner Piper Prescott Piper Prescott, a transplanted Yankee living in the South, has got her sass back.  She might be down, but don’t count her out.  “Change of life?” she asks.  Bring it on.  Recently divorced, Piper decides to pursue a dream she’s secretly harbored: owning her own business, Spice it Up!, a spice shop in her adopted hometown, Brandywine Creek, Georgia.  But Piper’s grand opening goes awry when the local chef who’s agreed to do a cooking demo is found stabbed.  Not only did Piper find the body, she handled the murder weapon and doesn’t have a witness to her alibi, making the case look like a slam dunk to brand new police Chief Wyatt McBride.  Desperate to uncover the truth—and prove her innocence—Piper enlists the help of her outspoken BFF Reba Mae Johnson to help track down the real culprit.  The pair compile a lengthy list of suspects and work to eliminate them using their own creative brand of sleuthing techniques including stakeouts, breaking and entering, and one very unorthodox chocolate pie. When Piper narrowly avoids being a victim of a hit-and-run, she knows she’s getting closer to the truth, but can she catch the killer and clear her name before she becomes the next victim? A captivating start to a new series featuring an unstoppably fabulous new crime-solving heroine, a colorful cast of small town characters, and more than a pinch of Georgia charm, Rosemary and Crime is sure to delight fans of Donna Andrews and Jessica Beck.

What I Plan To Read This Week

A dark, compelling and original thriller that will have you spellbound from its atmospheric opening pages to its shocking climax. Hades is the debut of a stunning new talent in crime fiction.  Hades Archer, the man they call the Lord of the Underworld, surrounds himself with the things others leave behind. Their trash becomes the twisted sculptures that line his junkyard. The bodies they want disposed of become his problem for a fee. Then one night a man arrives on his doorstep, clutching a small bundle that he wants ‘lost’. And Hades makes a decision that will change everything… Twenty years later, homicide detective Frank Bennett feels like the luckiest man on the force when he meets his new partner, the dark and beautiful Eden Archer. But there’s something strange about Eden and her brother, Eric. Something he can’t quite put his finger on. When the two detectives are called to the scene of an attempted drowning, they find a traumatised victim telling a story that’s hard to believe – until the divers start bringing up bodies.  Frank is now on the hunt for a very different kind of serial killer: one who offers the sick and dying hope at murderous cost. At first, his partner’s sharp instincts come in handy. Soon, he’s wondering if she’s as dangerous as the man they hunt.

A debut mystery set in the heart of moonshine country and brimming with Southern charm All small towns have secrets—and plenty of them—as every small town waitress knows. Daisy is no different. A young, recently-separated waitress at H&P’s Diner in sleepy southwestern Virginia, she hears more than her fair share of neighborhood gossip while serving plates of hash and peach cobbler. But when a reclusive old man, Dickerson, shows up at the diner one day, only to drop dead a few minutes later, Daisy quickly learns that some secrets are more dangerous to keep than others—especially when there’s money and moonshine involved. Daisy finds herself caught between whiskey and guns; a handsome ATF agent and a moonshine-brewing sweet talker; and a painful past and a dangerous present. Not sure any longer who she can trust, Daisy must turn sleuth while also protecting her sick mother and keeping a handle on Aunt Emily, her goading, trigger-happy landlord. There’s trouble brewing in her small town, and before it passes, many secrets will come to light. Carol Miller makes a memorable and charming debut in Murder and Moonshine, the first of an intriguing new series.

The New York Times bestselling Kate Daniels novels have been hailed as “top-notch urban fantasy” (Monsters and Critics). Now, Ilona Andrews delves deeper into Kate’s world, and reveals its untold stories…
After being kicked out of the Order of the Knights of Merciful Aid, Andrea’s whole existence is in shambles. She tries to put herself back together by working for Cutting Edge, a small investigative firm owned by her best friend. When several shapeshifters working for Raphael Medrano—the male alpha of the Clan Bouda, and Andrea’s former lover—die unexpectedly at a dig site, Andrea is assigned to investigate. Now she must work with Raphael as her search for the killer leads into the secret underbelly of supernatural Atlanta. And dealing with her feelings for him might have to take a back seat to saving the world…

  2. I have only read the one book by Ilona Andrews. I need to move on in the series! Happy birthday to your husband! I have to pause for a moment to think about hot weather and camping when we are shovelling out from a snowstorm!

  3. I hope you’re able to relax and enjoy some “me” time whilst camping. It’s so inconsiderate all these people having birthdays around Christmas isn’t it! In our family we have birthdays on the 25th, 27th, 28th, 29th, 2x31st and 2 x 4th Jan 😛 BTW I’m currently reading A Bush Christmas by Margareta Osborne to get me into the spirit of Christmas 🙂

  4. Luckily, we’re not big on Christmas presents. My boys usually get some electronics or games, my husband doesn’t want anything, so it’s just me, hoping… hoping… for something (anything!) nice.

    Have a good week!

  5. You do have a busy week, I hope you will get to relax a bit once you go camping. Christmas is so fun, but busy. I haven’t bought a gift yet for anyone in my family, that I will see for the actual day. I’m not sure when I will accomplish this since we don’t return home until Dec 24…. (poor planning).

My husband likes to shop, he bought our son a few very nice gifts. I have my son shopping this weekend.

    Have a lovely holiday.
