It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

The Its Monday! What Are You Reading meme is hosted at Book Journey.

Life…

I was so proud of my children who gave wonderful performances this week  in their annual school concerts, despite some nerves.  Sadly I have no photo’s to share as photography is not permitted at school events due to child protection issues. This weekend the three younger children are camping overnight with their cub pack a few hours south from here – they are very excited about all the activities that are planned.

Meanwhile, my oldest daughter  is busy looking  for the perfect dress for her upcoming Year 12 formal – so many choices – and so expensive! She wants something floor length, black and slinky though I am trying to convince her to try some colour.

On Wednesday author Nicole Alexander will be at my local library and I am looking forward to meeting her. I have previously read Absolution Creek and I am currently reading Sunset Ridge – look for my review and details about the event on Thursday.

I have posted reviews of some great books this past week – all 4 stars or more – make sure you browse around!

 What I Am Reading Today

They went to war and fought for love … Although Madeleine has grown up in the shadow of her grandfather, the renowned artist David Harrow, she knows little about him. For David died long before she was born, and his paintings sold off to save the family property, Sunset Ridge. Now, decades on, with the possibility of a retrospective of David’s work, Madeleine races to unravel the remarkable life of her grandfather, a veteran of the Great War, unaware that his legacy extends far beyond the boundaries of the family property… It’s 1916, and as Europe descends further into bloodshed, three Queensland brothers -Thaddeus, Luther and David Harrow – choose freedom over their restricted lives at Sunset Ridge. A ‘freedom’ that sees them bound for the hell of the trenches. With the world on fire around them, the brothers bear witness to both remarkable courage and shocking carnage. But they also come to understand the healing power of love – love for their comrades, love for each other, and love for the young, highly spirited girl they left back home… This is a story of bravery and misadventure, of intolerance and friendship, most of all it is the story of three young men who went to war and fought for love.

What I Plan To Read This Week

An escape to an idyllic Irish seaside village is about to turn deadly in this riveting new novel by master of romantic suspense Carla Neggers. For marine biologist Julianne Maroney, two weeks in tiny Declan’s Cross on the south Irish coast is a chance to heal her broken heart. She doesn’t expect to attract the attention of FBI agents Emma Sharpe and Colin Donovan—especially since a Donovan is the reason for her broken heart. Emma and Colin are in Ireland for their own personal retreat. Colin knows he’s a reminder of everything Julianne wants to escape, but something about her trip raises his suspicion. Emma, an art crimes expert, is also on edge. Of all the Irish villages Julianne could choose…why Declan’s Cross?  Ten years ago, a thief slipped into a mansion in Declan’s Cross. Emma’s grandfather, a renowned art detective, investigated, but the art stolen that night has never been recovered and the elusive thief never caught. From the moment Julianne sets foot on Irish soil, everything goes wrong. The well-connected American diver who invited her to Ireland has disappeared. And now Emma and Colin are in Declan’s Cross asking questions. As a dark conspiracy unfolds amid the breathtaking scenery of Declan’s Cross, the race is on to stop a ruthless killer…and the stakes have never been more personal for Emma and Colin.

The sixth book in the bestselling Confessions series. What is life like for a female Undercover Cop? Ash Cameron gives readers a behind-the-scenes look at life in the Police. Funny, moving and irreverent, you’ll never look at a bobby the same way again… Ash Cameron joined the police in the 70s – think Life on Mars with added ladders in her tights. From arresting East End gangsters, dealing out justice to football hooligans and coping with sexism on the job, Ash did it all. So when she was asked to go undercover, well, it was just another job, wasn’t it? Told with warmth and humour, these ‘confessions’ will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you roll your eyes as you learn exactly what goes on behind-the-scenes in the police…

Robert Duncan no longer believes in magic. A mysterious call about a blood moon, however, leads him back to the magical world of his childhood and to Luthien, the beautiful girl with flame-coloured hair, who he loved and lost. As Robert unravels the secrets of his childhood, darkness enters his life and an ancient evil awakens. To have any chance of defeating the dark forces that would destroy two worlds, Robert must find Luthien before the rise of the blood moon. He must, once more, believe in magic …  A Wicked Kind of Dark mixes vast and spectacular fantasy landscapes with gritty urban reality. A must-read for people of all ages who believe in the power of imagination, and the importance of never losing touch with your inner child

On the trail of a brutal killer with a meat cleaver and a grudge they’re also watching their backs as new technologies threaten their jobs. A throat-stopping, heart-thumping mystery from one of Australia’s most acclaimed crime writers.  A woman dies in her sleep in a houseboat on the Thames; the apparent cause of death, an unflued gas heater. It all seems straightforward, but DI Kathy Kolla isn’t convinced. Both Kathy and DCI Brock run up against opposition in their investigation. An aggressive new Commander seems to have a different agenda, focusing on the new realities of economic constraints, and favouring emerging technologies over the traditional policing methods. Old-fashioned coppers like Brock and Kolla are being squeezed out. To make matters worse, there’s a new Task Force moving in on their patch, and a brutal killer, Butcher Jack Bragg, to be tracked down and caught. It’s one of Brock and Kolla’s bloodiest investigations yet. A heart-thumping read, The Raven’s Eye gives us Brock and Kolla under pressure; it’s a clash between the menacing ever-present eye of computer surveillance versus the explosive threat of a man with a meat cleaver and a grudge.

  1. Congrats on the school concerts going well! I’m sure it means the world to them for you to be there. I’ve played tons of concerts, but still get excited when my parents come (I’ve been playing for 21 years).

I’m really excited to read The Returned. Your post reminded me about it 🙂

  2. Exciting times, end of year 12 and school formal … much easier with boys lol.
I liked The Returned, emotional and thought provoking but a little confronting too. A Wicked Kind Of Dark is on my reading list this week. Have a great week and happy reading 🙂

      1. I am not putting review on blog till the New Year – it is not published until March 014 (but I have posted on TRR) I think this is an author to watch out for. She has transitioned from Children’ s stories to crime fiction rather well.

  3. I love school concerts and end-of-year plays! Too bad you weren’t able to take photos, eventhough it’s normal that children should always be protected.

Oh, those dresses… I’m sure you’ll find one you’ll both be happy with 🙂

Seems like you read a lot of good books last week, hopefully, this week will be just as good.

Here’s my It’s Monday! post if you want to stop by.

  4. Hmm, many choices to add to my neverending wishlist! Appreciate your great reviews too.
Good luck changing your daughter’s mind over black and slinky–at that age they want to show how mature and sophisticated they really are (have a 20-something and a 30-something daughter; been there, done that.)

  5. dresses – most girls are so eager to look grown up. I was the same way. I agree with you, color is good. I LOVE dress shopping, I wear them all the time (even when I’m working from home). I’m actually still in a dress as I write this (ha… it’s 11:30 PM). I never sleep when my husband is away…

    Have an amazing week!
