“Alyssa has one week to destroy her enemy, save her spirit… and save her soul.
After her ex-boyfriend commits suicide and her mum’s alcoholism sparks yet another psychotic episode, seventeen-year-old Alyssa Wood flees her small hometown of Broadwater and heads to New York City to stay with her bohemian aunt — a Wicca High Priestess.
Alyssa revels in the anonymity of a big city and her new life. Her grades climb, she has a new best friend, and a new guy: the sexy geek Ronan — a saxophone player who prefers jazz to pop.
But her newfound peace is soon shattered when she sees a dead body in one of Ronan’s music clips — and she’s the only one who can see it. Worse still, Alyssa recognises the body that has been murdered a week forward!
Alyssa doesn’t believe in the supernatural…despite her family’s Wicca background. So how will she overcome evil when it’s closer than she thinks?”
Read on to learn how Nicola Marsh decided on the title of this novel, and your chance to win Banish!
EVOLUTION OF THE TITLE BANISH
I’m a writer who must have the perfect title before I can start writing a book. If the title doesn’t fit, my ideas don’t flow. My creativity is stifled.
With BANISH, the main idea for the book stemmed from a girl seeing something she shouldn’t on a YouTube clip.
When I fleshed out the idea, I upped the stakes for Alyssa, the heroine. What if Alyssa saw something freaky on a clip from someone she trusted? Wouldn’t that make it scarier and make her doubt her new boyfriend? But what if she was the only one who could see it? Considering her past, maybe she’d even doubt her own sanity?
And that’s the moment the perfect title came to me: Virtual Insanity. What Alyssa sees, a murder, takes place in a virtual world. And is she going insane?
However, when the fab team at Harlequin Teen Australia bought the book, they requested a title change. So I put my thinking cap on and came up with a few options:
THE SOUL RETRIEVER
SAVE MY SOUL
LIE TO ME
SOUL SAVIOUR
CONFIDE IN ME
HAUNTING SOULS
BANISH
DEATH SIGNS
Out of all of these, I particularly loved BANISH because there is so much in the book Alyssa needs to banish: her past, her doubts, her fears.
It encapsulates the book perfectly!
So I was rapt when the team at HQ Teen went with it!

Sounds interesting! I like the cover. Harlequin is on a bit of a winning streak with YA Paranormal Romance at the moment. 🙂

Oh how social media makes for interesting reading in YA lit. Sounds very cool. When I was a teen I had some not so nice friends. It took me years to banish them! Now all I would like to banish is the constant tiredness I feel having two very young children! Thanks for all the competitions!

Wow, your book sounds great, Nicola! I love the idea of seeing something no-one else can see on a filmclip. Reminds me of the subliminal messages that were rumored to underpin some music back in the 70s and 80s.
I would banish self-doubt. Worse than anyone else’s negativity is negativity about oneself!
