It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

The Its Monday! What Are You Reading meme is hosted at Book Journey.

Life…

It hasn’t been the easiest week – a killer migraine, a friend in crisis and  the usual busyness all conspired to throw me for a loop, hence the little I accomplished reading wise.

On a brighter note I enjoyed a delicious dinner of fish and chips (well I had calamari) for Valentine’s night,  booked tickets to attend the Newcastle Writers Festival at the beginning of April and I finally got my hands on Season 2 of Haven.
It’s the little things 🙂

What I Am Reading Today

Magic uses blood—a lot of it. The more that’s used, the more powerful the effect, so mages find “volunteers” to fuel their spells. Lem, however, is different. Long ago he set up a rule that lets him sleep at night: never use anyone’s blood but your own. He’s grifting through life as a Trickster, performing only small Glamours like turning one-dollar bills into twenties. He and his sidekick, Mags, aren’t doing well, but they’re getting by. That is, until they find young Claire Mannice— bound and gagged, imprisoned in a car’s trunk, and covered with invisible rune tattoos. Lem turns to his estranged mentor for help, but what they’ve uncovered is more terrifying than anybody could have imagined. Mika Renar, the most dangerous Archmage in the world, is preparing to use an ocean of blood to cast her dreams into reality— and Lem just got in her way.

What I Plan To Read This Week

(click the covers to view at Goodreads)

Jonelle Baxter is a young woman in a man’s world – a tough, hardworking motor mechanic from an idyllic country family. But lately things in her perfect life have been changing, and her workshop isn’t the only local business that’s struggling. Daniel Tyler is new in town, posted from the city to manage the community bank. As he tries to rein in the spiralling debts of Bundara, he uncovers all sorts of personal dramas and challenges. The last thing Jonny and Dan need is an unwanted attraction to each other. It’s going to take more than a good drop of rain to break the drought and to keep this small but very colourful community thriving.

Nora and Annie have been best friends since kindergarten. Nora, a shy English teacher at a quaint New England boarding school, longs to have a baby. Annie, an outspoken stay-at-home mother of two, longs for one day of peace and quiet (not to mention more money and some free time). Despite their very different lives, nothing can come between them—until Cynthia Cypress arrives on campus. Cynthia has it all: brains, beauty, impeccable style, and a gorgeous husband (who happens to be Nora’s ex). When Cynthia eagerly befriends Nora, Annie’s oldest friendship is tested. Now, each woman must wrestle the green-eyed demon of envy and, in the process, confront imperfect, mixed-up family histories they don’t want to repeat. Amid the hilarious and harried straits of friendship, marriage, and parenthood, the women may discover that the greenest grass is right beneath their feet.

On April 5, 1981, two college coeds were kidnapped from a residential street of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The next morning, the girls were found in a desolate mountain arroyo; one raped and murdered, the other savagely stabbed 33 times and left for dead. As fear engulfed the University of New Mexico’s quiet campus, police had few clues to assist them in tracking down the vicious killer. This book is based on the true story of what happened that night in the Sandia Mountains, a shockingly brutal crime that changed the city of Albuquerque forever. It is a gritty tale of unspeakable violence and the relentless search for justice, but it is also the story of a young woman’s incredible will to live … and her life-long struggle to escape the legacy of that deadly arroyo.

After suddenly receiving custody of his five year old son, Ben must learn how to be a father to a child with autism. Ben’s sixty hour a week work schedule goes out the window. Teacher Melanie Nicols sees Ben as a dead beat dad, but grudgingly comes to admire how he hangs in, determined to learn for his son’s sake. Her admiration grows to more as father and son come to rely on her.

  1. Hi Shelleyrae
Did you enjoy ‘The Autumn Bride’? I do hope so! I know Regency romances are not really your thing, but I do think her books have a lot of charm 🙂
    Happy reading!

    1. I did Kate – I actually used to be addicted to Josephine Cox’s Regency saga’s (though its been a long while since I picked one up) so it was pleasantly familar

  2. Really liked The Sunburnt Country – main part of the story is very similar to an experience in my own life so I could really relate to it.

  4. Sorry to hear about the migraine. You are the third gal in a week mentioning them. I know it’s not helpful but know you are not alone… hugs.

  5. Sorry for your migraine. That is one good thing about my accident. I used to suffer from miserable migraines but haven’t had one since the accident in 2001.

Hope this week is much better 🙂

  6. I have a cartoon hanging on my fridge. It’s been there for at least 10 years. It says, “Enjoy the little things and the big things will take care of themselves.” It might not be strictly true, but it’s true enough. It is the little things that keep us sane sometimes. I hope this week is better for you!
