What I Am Reading Today

Ixion. The island of ever-night.  If she had a choice, Naif wouldn’t go back. But her friends will die if she doesn’t find a cure for the badges that are slowly killing them, and her brother is there, fighting against the Ripers who hold everyone in thrall. And Naif has knowledge that might save them all. First she must solve the mystery of Ixion’s eternal night. Then she must convince everyone – rebels and revellers alike – to join her cause. And all the while, she must fight the urge to go to Lenoir – her greatest love, her mortal enemy.  The secrets of Ixion must be revealed. The evils must be stopped. A new dawn will come. {Night Creatures #3}

What I Plan To Read This Week

This collection of short stories by Karin Cox explores the choices and compromises we make in love, and how they can trap or liberate us depending on our mindset. Each story comes with an unexpected twist that makes reading all the way to the end imperative. In “Cage Life,” first published by [untitled] magazine in 2010 as “Still Life,” a young mum feels like a prisoner in her own home. Her decision to escape the bonds of marriage and motherhood, just for a few hours, has unexpected consequences that force her to a re-evaluate what it really means to be loved, to be married, and to be free. In “The Usurper,” unconditional love is explored within the boundaries of age and longing. Basil is in his eighties, with an illustrious career in law enforcement behind him, when he meets Carla — a beautiful, energetic and much younger mistress. But when Simon appears on the scene, can Basil keep her or does she, in fact, keep him?

Separated by a continent from her child, Gina Higgins comes to Kiss River with little more than a desperate plan. Now, saving her daughter depends on whether she can uncover a message buried deep below the ocean’s surface. Kiss River’s historic nineteenth-century lighthouse has all but fallen into the sea, taking with it the huge Fresnel lens that once served as its beacon. Gina is desperate to find a way to raise the lens as the glass holds the key to her future, her fortune and her only chance to save the one person who matters to her. Clay O’Neill lives in the old lightkeeper’s house, a home he shares with his sister, Lacey. When Lacey invites her to stay with them, Gina eagerly accepts. As Gina begins her quest to raise the lens, Clay finds himself drawn to her struggle, and to Gina herself. But the answers lie deep below the ocean. And the lighthouse holds secrets that neither Clay nor Gina can anticipate…

In this pacey Australian crime novel, ex-reporter Nat Barker finds himself on a racetrack in the middle of a feud between two warring bookmakers. One of them just happens to be Barker’s best friend, out to avenge his father’s murder. The other wants to end the feud—permanently—and Barker is standing in his way. When bookmaker Hamilton Helsingor asks Barker to help avenge his father’s death, Barker thinks his friend is nuts. After all, everyone knows it was suicide. But after being almost knifed and then shot at by decidedly nasty types who don’t care for his nosy questions, Barker begins to think Hamilton might just be right. As the violence mounts and the corpses accumulate against a background of jazz, harbour breezes, horseracing and a fencing duel on Bondi Beach, Barker begins to wonder if friendship is worth dying for

Based on the lives of the author’s own grandparents, Hannah & Emil is a remarkable story of enduring love set against the backdrop of World War II. As post-World War I Germany heads toward collapse, Emil finds himself clashing with the political forces gaining ascendency. Hannah, a Russian Jew in the West End of London, leaves home for Europe. In Brussels, working for the trade unions, she meets the devastated Emil, who has just crossed the border on foot from Nazi Germany, leaving tragedy in his wake. After they make a new life in England, war strikes, and Emil, an enemy alien, is transported to Australia. Determined to find him, Hannah sets off on the dangerous journey across the seas .

Gideon Cross. As beautiful and flawless on the outside as he was damaged and tormented on the inside. He was a bright, scorching flame that singed me with the darkest of pleasures. I couldn’t stay away. I didn’t want to. He was my addiction… my every desire… mine. My past was as violent as his, and I was just as broken. We’d never work. It was too hard, too painful… except when it was perfect. Those moments when the driving hunger and desperate love were the most exquisite insanity. We were bound by our need. And our passion would take us beyond our limits to the sweetest, sharpest edge of obsession…

    1. I haven’t Marg, and to be honest I’m not very enthusiastic about it. I’m going to give Reflected a go but if I can’t follow it I will give it up
