What I Am Reading Today

Croyd Terrace is an entirely unremarkable street in a northern provincial town. Or is it? Behind the veneer of ordinariness, the banality of humdrum routine, are there other forces at work? And if so, what can Miss Larkin and the Widow Marvell do about it? Joolz Denby has taken Magic Realism and moved it North. Put it in an urban home, and sprinkled it lightly with essence of Bradford. The result is a delightful interweaving of light and dark, rich with Joolz’s trademark prose.

What I Plan To Read This Week

John holds the American dream: A man he loves, a beautiful little girl, a suburban home and a well-paying job… And then a sudden layoff brings about unexpected financial and emotional strain. As he struggles to find new work, a growing sense of despair triggers a relapse into alcoholism and causes him to face his demons of addiction, discrimination, and regret as he tries desperately to recover before it’s too late

From the acclaimed author of Live Nude Elf, Rev Jen recounts her rise from art school misfit to “patron saint of the uncool” in this wry, irreverent memoir. Artist, mail-order Reverend, and all-around creative type Rev Jen is known for sporting elf ears and being curator of a Troll Museum inside her sixth-floor walkup apartment on the lower east side of New York City. She counts among her accomplishments being creator and host of “Anti-Slam,” an open-mike series where everyone gets a perfect ten (which The Village Voice calls “performance meets cry for help”), and working as a Christmas Elf at Bloomingdales. Now, this anti- Sex and the City girl and cheerleader for nonconformists, geeks, and oddballs of the world delivers a funnier, quirkier version of I Was Told There’d Be Cake or The Idiot Girls’ Action-Adventure Club . She’s zany, eccentric, and hopeful, and her unchecked candor makes her impossible not to love, as she recounts various tales from her colorful life.

Anne is the quiet, clever but generally overlooked wife of a powerful Hollywood producer. Inadvertently, and somewhat to her own surprise, Anne starts a book group for a small group of her husband’s colleagues in the movie industry. Like a modern-day Scheherazade, Anne tells the book group stories – about books, writers and reading – and talks about how these stories can shape our lives. The movie moguls fall hard for literature, and like topsy, the book group grows and grows, in size and numbers and influence, until something unexpected and terrible happens, and Anne finds her life and her marriage falling apart. Determined to keep her family – her husband Howard and their much-loved only son, Sam – together, Anne fights back the only way she knows how, through literature.  Assured, clever, witty and tender, You Or Someone Like You is a novel about books, identity and love.

On the eve of her 39th birthday, top barrister Ophelia Dormandy decides she is going to make amends. Tonight, after months of late nights at her desk, she’s going to return home early, cook a special supper – maybe wear that red dress Patrick once said he liked… But Ophelia is in for a shock. After 20 years of marriage, her husband announces he’s been having an affair, and leaves. Her home life implodes, and work soon follows suit – before long, she’s broke, drinking too much and falling for a client of questionable guilt. And then she is faced with the most serious trial of her life, when a disgruntled defendant comes back to haunt her, threatening everything that she holds dear.

At university Josh had dreamed of investigative journalism, exposing corruption and changing the world for the better. After a romance and friendship fail simultaneously he finishes his university studies with little motivation except a desire to head to London. Back in Brisbane, at his brother Brett’s urging he takes on a job for law firm Randall Hood Beckett, getting some coverage for one of their employees who is to be awarded the Star of Courage. That employee happens to be university mate and girlfriend-stealer Ben Harkin.  Details of the office siege in which Ben is said to have performed ‘a conspicuous act of courage’ in saving partner Frank Ainsworth’s life when he is threatened by a crazed gunman just don’t ring true for Josh. Is he still holding a grudge or is Ben keeping something from him?  Will three days on the Gold Coast with Ben and law-student/stripper Hayley/Jett restore old friendships, begin new romances and improve their putting, or, reveal details to change all their lives?

  3. Looks like you had a few not-so-great books last week. Hope this week is going to be better. With me, sometimes it’s my mood that makes me dislike several books in a row but sometimes it’s the (bad) luck of the draw!
