Hi – sorry I didn’t make it last week, I had two of my children celebrating birthdays (My second youngest son turned 7 and my oldest daughter turned 15) and the stress triggered a 3 day migraine. As I scrambled to catch up from those interruptions my grandfather unexpectedly passed away on Thursday, so things have not been particularly smooth sailing here.
Still, gotta keep moving – so here is what you might have missed during the last fortnight

This Won’t Hurt A Bit (and Other White Lies) by Michelle Au: ★★★ Dr. Michelle Au shares her journey through the process of medical certification, complicated by marriage and motherhood, in this warm and gently witty memoir.
A Drop of The Hard Stuff by Lawrence Block: ★★★★ A bonus read for fans who thought the series had finished, and a perfect way to introduce a new generation to Lawrence Block’s classic detective fiction, A Drop of the Hard Stuff is an example of one of the genre’s best written series.
My Perfect Wedding by Sibel Hodge: ★★ A light read, written for laughs and offering sitcom style satisfaction, easily enjoyed
R.A.C.E. by Moshabar Qureshi: ★★ A potential for solid storytelling and is a short and pleasantly entertaining read.
Raw Blue by Kirsty Eager: ★★★★★A compelling novel, insightful and poignant…naturally, authentically Australian, and so gloriously, beautifully written. A stunning debut.
Don’t Breathe A Word by Jennifer McMahon: ★★★★★ A compelling yet disturbing contemporary tale where dreams and nightmares breathe in shadows and the veil between reality and fantasy is gossamer thin. Hauntingly enigmatic
Things I Want My Daughter To Know by Elizabeth Noble: ★★ Rather ordinary read for me despite it’s appealing premise.
Miss New India by Bharati Mukherjee: ★★ Set in contemporary Indian society, Miss New India is an interesting insight into the changing culture of the country .
Burn Bright {Night Creatures #1} by Marianne de Pierres: ★★★★ An intoxicating and edgy adventure from accomplished Australian writer, Marianne de Pierres.

Q: Can you tell us FIVE quirky habits or things about you? We all have them…
1. I can write with my left hand almost as well as my right hand (I’m ambidextrous).
2. I don’t like answering the phone from withheld numbers so I usually screen calls – this is a recent thing, just a year or two ago I couldn’t imagine not answering a ringing phone!
3. I usually only sleep 3 to 4 hours a night (seems like a lot of book bloggers are insomniacs!)
4. I always have a book (or my e-rerader) in reach no matter where I go
5. I find it impossible to name just one favourite anything and get incredibly anxious when asked what my favourite (animal/color/book/place) is – I will avoid the question at all costs.
Hmm quirky bordering on odd I think!

This week’s question comes from Ivan who blogs at Ivan Bookworm:
“If you were given the chance to spend one day in a fictional world (from a book), which book would it be from and what would that place be?”
I would choose a day hanging around in Harry Potter’s world, visiting Diagon Alley, wandering the halls of Hogwarts, watching a game of Quidditch etc. I am sure it will be a popular answer because the combination of magic and imagination is irresistible.

I don’t answer my phone if I don’t know the number, mostly because I can guarantee that it’s a telemarketer. I do stress out afterwards though in case it was a friend or someone wanting to tell me I’d won a competition!

I also can write in my right hand despite of me being a left-handed. But it’s not as good as my left. Well, I’m happy to be left, they say we’re different. But I can’t find how? or why? LOL

Happy Friday — and nice to see you on the Hop! 🙂 I agree with you on the call-screening thing. We have talking caller ID at home and I love it.
I’m on a LibraryThing, too – happy to connect, if you like, or if you want to take a look at my library. My name over there is Naberius. 🙂

Hey there!
So, okay, I’m a total dork who couldn’t find the “follow” link on your blog, so I signed up for email instead 😉 I agree with you about the phone. We never, NEVER answer ours. I have to wait until it goes to answering machine, hear a voice I know, and only then do I pick up. Same goes for the doorbell (maybe even more paranoid about that actually). Anyway, I look forward to reading more of your posts and thanks for checking out my blog!

Thanks for the visit Shelley!
As always, it looks like you’ve had a busy week on the blog 🙂
How do you get so many posts written up? I have a hard time doing even 2-3 a week…(including one Friday Hop post).

I never answer withheld numbers either. I don’t understand why people withhold their numbers! It’s just silly. Unless they’re prank calling, of course. I usually just let it ring, and then wait for a text message if it’s important 🙂
Have a great weekend!

I’ve seen a lot of great picks and gathered some fresh titles to add to my ever-growing TBR list. My answer will probably stun most people because the world I picked is a place most people would be scared to death of and try to escape from. Me? I want in.
