Now at Library Thing

I love Goodreads, it’s my favourite book community, I check in a couple of times a day and now I have added my self to Library Thing. It’s not all that dissimilar from Goodreads but I figured it provides another outlet for my reviews and since I could simply export my details at Goodreads and upload them straight into Library Thing it was quick and easy process – I wouldn’t have considered it otherwise with over 3500 books on my shelves at Goodreads.

Now I just have to find my way around and neaten things up a bit. Are you at Library Thing? Any hints or tips? Want to be friends?

Edited to add:

How to export your shelves from

Goodreads to Library Thing

Log in at Goodreads and go to ‘My Shelves’ – from the menu at the left choose Import/Export

On the next screen look to the right to find export to a csv file and click

Click OK to the window that appears, when the file has finished building a ‘save’ dialogue will appear. Save the file to your hard drive.

Log in at Library Thing, go to Add books and scroll down for the option to Import Books

Choose Browse for Import From a File and select the csv file you downloaded from Goodreads

Click Upload

The file will upload and queue your books, it may take a couple of hours for your library to be populated so give it some time.

Reviews, tags and star ratings all travel with the file information which is wonderful Library Thing doesn’t have a Read shelf so those books won’t have a tag, but most other information should import easily. You may find books without ISBN’s don’t show up, so you may have to manually add those.

The reverse pretty much works to go from The Library Thing to Goodreads.

In case you need something a little more visual, I created a step by step image screenshot tutorial which you can download HERE

  1. I like LibraryThing a lot — I have a GoodReads account, which I use for books I own plus the library books I read (LibraryThing is just for books I own – with a few with a “want” tag as a wishlist). The Early Reviewers program on LibraryThing is cool, and so are some of the groups — it’s a nice complement to GoodReads. 🙂

If you want to find me or my library, my LibraryThing name is Naberius. 🙂

  2. I am addicted to goodreads. I am also on LibraryThing. My shelves at goodreads.com are much more accurate than the ones on LibraryThing though, as I find it more time consuming to find and add books on LibraryThing. I have the lifetime paid membership so I can list unlimited books. How did you export your goodreads shelves to LibraryThing? I would love to do that!!

    Here is my LibraryThing http://www.librarything.com/home/momtotwo

    (which I really should update!!)

  3. Welcome to LibraryThing!
I started out with this site before even discovering Goodreads. Now I’m on both, but personally, as far as libraries go, I prefer LibraryThing.
You know what’s funny? I have already prepared a LT vs. GR blog post for tomorrow, so you might want to stop by on Wednesday to have a look.

Feel free to friend me: http://www.librarything.com/home/BLehner

  5. Hey…I’m on LibraryThing…I’ve requested your friendship. Also, thanks for posting the steps on how to upload info from Goodreads to LibraryThing…I love Goodreads, and all my info is on there, but I would like to be more involved on LibraryThing too.

  6. Oh, nice! 🙂 Thanks for the info! I’m more of a Goodreads user, but I added all my books to LibraryThing now. Anything to keep my books organized!:))

  7. I haven’t tried to export anything. I just started from the day I signed into Library Thing. So, I do not have nearly as many books at LT. I just sent you a friend request. I usually just copy and paste my review from Goodreads right onto LT.
