Giveaway & Guest Post: Christy Trujillo, author of the Maldito Series

I am happy to welcome Christy Trujillo the author of the Maldito series, a paranormal romance trilogy that includes Emmy’s Song, Emmy’s Heart and Sarah’s Fate, the subject of my review yesterday.

Hi everyone! I’m so happy to be here and very thankful to the lovely Shelleyrae for allowing me to have some space in her corner of the world. A little about me: My name is Christy. I love my cats. I love to write. I’m still learning how to be an author-because there’s a difference y’all, and I believe in vampires.

My first three novels are available through Devine Destinies and I’m still in shock that they were accepted as they were the first novels I ever completed. To be honest, The Maldito Trilogy didn’t start out as a trilogy at all. When I sent out query letters, it was just for one story – Emmy’s Heart, the story of Emmy and Cale start to finish. It wasn’t until a few drafts later that Emmy’s Story was split in two. There aren’t any rules to go by. It’s not like if your story is 55,000 words long one book is okay but if you go past 55,001 then you’ve got to make it two. It was just a feeling for me. It was like the curtain closed on act one and there needed to be an act two. Thankfully, my publisher agreed.

As for Sarah and her fate, I remember the exact moment that I first heard her voice. Yes, I can hear my characters in my head, and that is pretty normal across the board for all authors. (I know because I checked, just to make sure I wasn’t crazy.) I was sitting at my desk at work and she called Andres’ name. It seems like a small thing but that was all it took for me to know they belonged together and Sarah’s Fate was born.

Now take it from me, this is not the way to write. Things need to be planned. Outlines need to be made. It allows for a story that flows through the books evenly and doesn’t feel choppy to the reader. I know this now. Three books and about 150K words later, I know this. But we all learn somewhere. My favorite example of the way things should be done is in Twilight – sorry I’m a fan. It is what it is – Bella says in the very first chapter that she never feels in sync, that she has felt out of place and off her whole life. Then Edward can’t read her mind. Then Jane can’t hurt her. Then in Breaking Dawn, we find out that she was different. Her mind was different from that of every other human on the planet. Now, if that’s not some dang good foreshadowing, I don’t know what is.

I’m moving away from the trilogy format myself. My next two books are both singles, one story told from start to finish in each. True North is a shape shifter thing that will be out later this year and FireFlys is the story of a girl who loses her dad in a fire and how her life changes because of it. I must admit though, when I love a book, I mean ‘move me to my core I can’t put it down’ love it, I hate it when they end. I feel empty and pray that the author will write more. Who knows, maybe someone will feel that way about True North or FireFlys and who would I be to turn down a reader’s request?

Thanks for stopping by book’d out today. I hope you come back soon.

Happy reading!

Great guest post! I love how Christy mentioned the method of foreshadowing and the foresight it takes to make it work through a series. Stephanie Meyer is a great example of one who uses this technique well. So is J.K. Rowling.

Please enter me in the contest. I’d love to read the Maldito Series.
