Life…
Ugh, it’s been hot here! How hot you ask?
This is the electronic signage board at the local club that flashes the temperature, time and advertisements. For my American readers, 50C equals 122F
Yes! That hot!

What I Am Reading Today
A History of the Present Illness takes readers into overlooked lives in the neighborhoods, hospitals, and nursing homes of San Francisco, offering a deeply humane and incisive portrait of health and illness in America today. An elderly Chinese immigrant sacrifices his demented wife’s well-being to his son’s authority. A busy Latina physician’s eldest daughter’s need for more attention has disastrous consequences. A young veteran’s injuries become a metaphor for the rest of his life. A gay doctor learns very different lessons about family from his life and his work, and a psychiatrist who advocates for the underserved may herself be crazy. Together, these honest and compassionate stories introduce a striking new literary voice and provide a view of what it means to be a doctor and a patient unlike anything we’ve read before.

Welcome to Avalon, Illinois, Pop. 4,243 At Madeline’s Tea Salon, the cozy hub of the Avalon community, local residents scrapbook their memories and make new ones. But across town, other Avalonians are struggling to free themselves of the past: Isabel Kidd is fixing up her ramshackle house while sorting through the complications of her late husband’s affair. Ava Catalina is mourning the love of her life and helping her young son grow up without his father. Local plumber Yvonne Tate is smart, beautiful, and new to Avalon, but finds that despite a decade of living life on her own terms, the past has a way of catching up—no matter where she goes. And Frances Latham, mother to a boisterous brood of boys, eagerly anticipates the arrival of a little girl from China—unprepared for the emotional roller coaster of foreign adoption. Enter Bettie Shelton, the irascible founder of the Avalon Ladies Scrapbooking Society. Under Bettie’s guidance, even the most reluctant of Avalon’s residents come to terms with their past and make bold decisions about their future. But when the group receives unexpected news about their steadfast leader, they must pull together to create something truly memorable.
Once upon a time… A man was cursed to the Shadowlands, his heart replaced with a cold lump of gold. In legends he became known as The Goblin King. For a favored few he will grant a wish. Yet, desperately clinging to his waning human soul, his one own desire remains unfulfilled: A Willing Queen. But who would consent to move from the modern-day world into the realm of nightmares? No matter how intoxicating his touch, no matter how deep his valor, loving him is dangerous. And the one woman who might dare to try could also destroy him forever.
The Man of Her Dreams He is like a prince in a fairy tale: tall, outrageously handsome, and way too dark for her own good. Amanda has been hurt before, though. And with her daughter’s illness, the last thing she needs right now is a man. But the power of Dai King is hard to resist. And when he threads his hands through her hair and pulls her in for a kiss, there is no denying it feels achingly right. In a Land of Nightmares After being trapped in the Shadowlands for centuries with the goblin horde a constant threat, Dai revels in his newfound freedom back in the human realm. But even with the centuries of magic he’s accumulated, he still doesn’t know how to heal Amanda’s daughter–and it breaks his heart. Yet for the woman he loves, he’d risk anything…including a retun to the Shadowlands.
Centuries ago, Meryn was thought to be utterly lost–all traces of his soul given up to the ravening goblin horde. But with the curse that enslaved him now broken, he must once again learn to walk in the realm of men. Nurse Nadine Gilbert likes working the night shift to avoid her disturbing dreams, but her mysterious new patient looks hauntingly familiar. Meryn knows he doesn’t deserve a second chance, but Nadine brings out his long-buried human side. Telling her the truth about his violent past could destroy their fragile trust. Could she ever believe in the love of a Goblin Warrior?

Jan 14, 2013 @ 15:31:50
It sounds fun doesn’t it!
Jan 14, 2013 @ 13:08:52
Holy cow, that is hot! Probably hotter than anything I’ve ever been in. Although I did have to do high school marching band once when it was 116 F out. That was bad.
All of your books are new to me, so I look forward to seeing what you think of them.
Jan 14, 2013 @ 15:32:16
Ugh Audrey at least I got to stay inside!
Jan 14, 2013 @ 13:57:33
What a nice looking selection of books. I know I have never been anywhere with temperatures that high. Minnesota just doesn’t get that warm. I hope you are surviving the heat. Come see what I read last week here. Happy reading!
Jan 14, 2013 @ 15:32:50
I can’t imagine it ever getting as cold as it does in Minnesota!
Jan 14, 2013 @ 14:19:38
Whoa! That’s hot! Hope the heat doesn’t keep you from reading…
Jan 14, 2013 @ 15:33:21
Lol – I got more done since I wasn’t willing to leave the house!
Jan 14, 2013 @ 15:14:17
122?!?!? I like heat, but that’s just ridiculous. Stay cool!
Jan 14, 2013 @ 15:33:39
Thanks goodness today is only 25!
Jan 14, 2013 @ 16:26:19

That’s really, really hot! I was complaining last summer when the thermometer topped 105.
I’m reading, actually listening to, The Last Runaway this week. One disc in and I’m already hooked. The Avalon Ladies sounds like it will be a good one.
Jan 14, 2013 @ 18:50:07
And I was complaining about it getting to 44 degrees in Sydney’s west last week! Gosh, Shelleyrae 50 must be unbearable! We also had a nice change today with cooler temps
Happy reading this week!
Jan 14, 2013 @ 20:19:29
Oh that’s foul, and I’m not coping with 39 up here lol. The humidity is just dreadful … so grateful for aircon and pool though. Being a keen scrapper The Avalon Ladies Scrapbooking Society appeals to me, hope you enjoy it.
Happy reading and stay cool
Jan 14, 2013 @ 23:08:57
That is extremely hot! Doesn’t life shut down? Schools close, people stay indoors? No? Oh!
Well, I do hope it’s better soon, that is desert temperature, suitable for cacti and snakes only.
Jan 15, 2013 @ 19:08:42
School is on holidays all of January , but yes usually you are allowed to keep children at home if the temperature exceeds 40C – not all classrooms have air conditioners!
Jan 15, 2013 @ 01:38:35
Oh that heat
I have fits when it gets to 80 degrees here. I’d absolutely melt! I hope you stay indoors and COOL and enjoy your reading!
Jan 15, 2013 @ 03:39:17
The Avalon Ladies Scrapbooking Society sounds really cute! I hope you enjoy all your reads this week!
And 122? That sounds positively awful!!!
Jan 15, 2013 @ 04:40:42
122? Wow, that is awful. We had 40 below temps a few years back and it was bad but it’s easier for me to get warm than to cool off. I don’t think I’d want to move at 122 degrees.
Can’t wait to hear what you think about those Goblin books. The covers look intriguing
Jan 15, 2013 @ 19:09:30
Lol Laurie, it rarely goes below 5 degrees here so – 40 would be a shock!
Jan 15, 2013 @ 05:06:38
Wish it was hot here in Vegas, we are having a freezing spell!
Jan 15, 2013 @ 06:28:11
I need to get to The Avalon Ladies soon. I really overbooked my January
Feel free to send some heat this way. I think I am getting the flu.
Jan 15, 2013 @ 06:50:19
Oh my, that is hot, hot, hot! I have Finding Casey on my stack and was glad to find out from you that it is a continuation of another book!
Jan 15, 2013 @ 19:07:09
It was a surprise, though luckily it didn’t really make much of a difference
Jan 15, 2013 @ 12:03:35
You had such a great week last week! Enjoy your books this week!
Jan 15, 2013 @ 18:56:32
Thanks Yvonne!
Jan 15, 2013 @ 13:43:44
A History of the Present Illness sounds like a really fascinating story collection. I’m off to find out when and if it will be published in the US.
Jan 15, 2013 @ 18:56:06
You should have no problem finding in Lindsey as its a US publication. I found it quite unusual and fascinating
Jan 15, 2013 @ 13:59:35
I was intrigued with Daddy Love but one to many negative reviews now. Enjoy this week Shellyrae.
Jan 15, 2013 @ 18:55:15

Is that like the movie 9 Parrish?
Jan 16, 2013 @ 02:05:22
Oh my goodness I dont know how you are coping. When it hits 40 degrees around here I’m reduced to a whining heap. I hope you’re able to find a way to cool off and enjoy a couple of those books try to have a good week!
